JV Corner: Early Season Standouts

Here are a few players who have gotten off to a good start…</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"fontSize":"medium"} --> <p class="has-medium-font-size"><strong>Pol Hernandez</strong>&nbsp;(Chelsea HS)</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"fontSize":"medium"} --> <p class="has-medium-font-size">Pol was very aggressive in the match-up against Vestavia. He does a good job applying pressure on the defensive end of the floor. He seems to take pride in defending as he picked up ball-handlers full-court and made them earn every piece of real estate they got. He moves his feet well and keeps his hands active. He fits well into the Rebels system and does his part in being a disruptive component. He plays very aggressively on both ends of the floor, and there was not a moment when I saw him take a play off. He shot the ball very well from deep in the contest I saw him in. He is an emerging prospect who can really score the rock. He doesn't waste a lot of movement as he sees openings and gets downhill. He is a strong finisher in the paint and at the cup, and contact from defenders did very little to knock him off course from scoring. He struggled a little against Chelsea, but he never allowed his struggles to impact his ability to impact other areas of the game. The fact that he stayed aggressive and continued to attack off the bounce forced the defense to remain engaged in trying to contain him. Porter did a good job creating for his teammates even though he couldn't get it going in the scoring column. You can tell he just had an off night and will bounce back.&nbsp; &nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"fontSize":"medium"} --> <p class="has-medium-font-size"><strong>Brandon Griffith</strong>&nbsp;(Chelsea HS)</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"fontSize":"medium"} --> <p class="has-medium-font-size">Brandon is a lengthy interior presence who is a big-time rim protector. He has good shot-blocking instincts and timing and was a deterrent to ball handlers looking to score off the bounce. His presence on defense allows the guards on his team to play highly aggressive on-ball defense, knowing they have their big man sitting in the paint that blocks shots at a high rate. Offensively, Brandon finishes well in the paint and around the rim. He knocked down 4-threes in the contest that I saw him, and the ones he missed were halfway down. His offensive prowess from behind the line is going to pay huge dividends for his future in the Rebels program. It was great to see that Jon Allen can put it on the floor when defenders run him off the line, and he doesn't struggle but has good ball-handling skills. He has versatile offensive talent and can score in catch-and-shoot opportunities as well as at the rim through contact in transition and in the half-court.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph -->
