Heading into their senior year, we have a good understanding of this class and the depth of talent. However, there will always be omissions and debates regarding placement among the rankings.
Here’s a look at part one of the wings rankings, looking at some of the top shooting guards and small forwards in the class.
25) Marius Mazeika Marius Mazeika 6'3" | SG Woodberry Forest | 2024 State VA | 6’3” SG | Woodberry Forest (#62 Overall)
Mazeika is a talented two guard with a lot of tools that are translatable to the next level, as he has a blend of athleticism and skill set that gives him a good chance to play early and get better moving forward. He’s a dead eye shooter from deep with effortless range, he can attack the paint and get downhill as a finisher and he is an explosive finisher who has good hang time and body control.
24) Finnegan Black Finnegan Black 6'6" | SF St. Anne’s Belfield | 2024 State VA | 6’6” SF | STAB (#60 Overall)
Black may at times get overshadowed on this STAB team that has a lot of talent in the 2025 class, but he’s going to play an important role if they’re going to try to make another run to the state championship game. The 6’6” wing has prototypical size on the wing and he uses his length to get deflections and challenge shots, he can hit shots when he’s left open on the perimeter and he is a good rebounder and brings toughness to his team too.
23) Rodney Ekwoanya Rodney Ekwoanya 6'5" | SF Evergreen Christian | 2024 State VA | 6’5” SF | Evergreen Christian (#57 Overall)
Ekwoanya makes his debut in the rankings, as he had a stellar summer and fall with Evergreen Christian and he’s super productive night in and night out across the board. He’s long and athletic and his high motor allows him to be a good rebounder, he can guard multiple positions and is great jumping passing lanes and he’s constantly around the ball offensively moving well off the ball to get easy buckets on cuts.
22) Jermaine Detrick Jermaine Detrick 6'3" | SG Woodside | 2024 State VA | 6’3” SG | Woodside (#55 Overall)
Detrick heads into his senior year as one of the leaders for the reigning state champion Wolverines, and while some of the underclassmen may have more recruitment going on he is as vital to their success as anyone on the team. He’s a good shooter who can knock down shots consistently from deep, he’s a good secondary ball handler who can attack and score it off the bounce and he’s a good on ball defender particularly in the press too.
21) Alex Chaikin Alex Chaikin 6'4" | SG Trinity Episcopal | 2024 State VA | 6’5” SG | Trinity Episcopal (#52 Overall)
Chakin had a big summer running with Virginia Premier and he made a name for himself with college coaches, and so far this fall he looks like he’ll be a go-to guy for TES this year. At 6’5” he has long arms and good size on the wing, he’s an absolute driller from deep who moves well off the ball and has effortless range and he can attack closeouts and get to the paint where he’s a good finisher as well.
20) Peter Mitchell Peter Mitchell 6'2" | SG Potomac | 2024 State VA | 6’2” SG | Potomac (#51 Overall)
Mitchell has been around the block and is one of the more seasoned players in the NOVA area, and he’ll be one of the go-to guys for Potomac this year. The 6’2” off guard has excellent fundamentals as he can attack going either way and finish with both hands, he moves well off the ball to get open and can make shots from deep and in the midrange and he has great instincts on the defensive end as well.
19) Teddy Morgan Teddy Morgan 6'6" | SG Edison | 2024 State VA | 6’6” SG | Edison (#48 Overall)
This will be the last time Morgan is in the VA rankings as we recently discovered he transferred to Grace Brethren in Maryland, but he’s an intriguing prospect with a lot of upside moving forward. At 6’6” he has a strong frame that is college ready, he is exceptional in transition with his explosive and strong finishing ability and he brings great energy on both ends of the floor and on the glass.
18) Zekhi Darden Zekhi Darden 6'5" | SF King's Fork | 2024 State VA | 6’5” SF | King’s Fork (#46 Overall)
Darden has been an impact player over the past few years for King’s Fork and has been one of the top glue guys in the 757, and this may be his breakout season as he will have the opportunity as the senior leader to make plays. At 6’5” he’s athletic enough to play and guard multiple positions, he’s very good at attacking the offensive glass and he has good ball skills as a shooter and a slasher on the perimeter too.
17) Bryce Breeden Bryce Breeden 6'3" | SG Madison County | 2024 State VA | 6’3” SG | Madison County (#43 Overall)
Breeden makes his debut in the rankings after earning Region 2B Player of the Year honors while averaging 17 points, 5.6 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game for the region champs Madison County. The 6’3” off guard is a tough shot maker who knows how to create space off the bounce and gets into his shot quickly, he has deadly range well beyond the three-point line and he’s a high IQ player who makes winning plays on both ends of the floor.
16) Ben Wesson Ben Wesson 6'4" | SG Albemarle | 2024 State VA | 6’4” SG | Albemarle (#42 Overall)
Wesson had a breakout junior season at Albemarle where he averaged over 15 points per game and showed he’s one of the top shooters and scorers in the Charlottesville area. The 6’4” off guard is crafty off the bounce with the ability to explode when he gets to the rim, he shoots the ball from deep at a very high clip with a decent amount of attempts per game and he’s simply a playmaker across the board on both ends of the floor.
