The Prep Hoops staff is taking a closer look inside Tennessee high school basketball programs, as they gear up for the 2023-2024 season. Our next team feature is the Gatlinburg-Pittman Highlanders.
Head Coach: Rashid Moore (6th year at Gatlinburg-Pittman)
Assistant Coaches: Gabriel Hinton, Noah Clinton
State Tournament Record: 1-1
State Tournament Appearances (1): 1973
Record Holders: Donald Dodgen is 7th All-Time in Career Points with 3318 points.
Carlos Orr “is definitely going to play [basketball], but it depends what he wants to do in January, if he wants to go to school (college) early,” said Head Coach Rashid Moore. “He is going to play until he is no longer here.”
The Highlanders need the rebounding and defensive prowess of Carlos to be their best version. He is a program staple, for the last 3+ years.
Coach Rashid Moore on Carlos OrrHe is a longer athlete. He is normally just as athletic as a small guard, but he has an obvious advantage especially rebounding and in the paint with his length. So, that is a matchup advantage that he creates. We don’t have that from a lot of guys on the roster.
Ty Glasper “has gotten stronger in the weight room each year,” said Head Coach Moore. “And he has also increased his consistency, which is hard to do because he played so well as a freshman. But now he is so much more well-oiled. He is a fine-tuned machine.”
“With our district being so tough [Ty] is going to have to play well for us to do well, but I also feel like we will have more role guys this year than we have had in the past,” shared Head Coach Moore. “Not only are those guys older now with experience, but we also have a few newcomers that I think will help us.”
“Wade Whaley is the only other junior in that class with Ty,” observed Head Coach Moore. “He is phenomenal. He has gotten better each year. He has those physical tools. His brother is going to play football at Wake Forest, so [Wade] has those physical tools from that standpoint. But he is a worker. He is long. He is about 6’2″. And we play him at guard. He has put a lot in the gym. His shot is better and he has always been a good defender.”
“With Carlos and Wade, I think that will give us some matchup advantages from the wing spot.” We also brought in a senior from North Carolina. His name is Mason Harriss Mason Harriss 6'5" | SF Gatlinburg-Pittman | 2024 TN . He is a guy that is about 6’4″, athletic. We are going to play him at the 4 to start out. We will play him at the “5” if we have to, but we want to play him at the “4”. Some at the “3”. He is a guy that can score inside and shoot it outside. Some ball-handling. So, I feel like he will definitely fit right in. Help us.
“I think he will [play college],” said Head Coach Moore. “He went to Maryville’s camp with Raul Placeres. He got some positive feedback.
“His main thing is, we are going to have to get him to play with a high level of confidence. I think right now he is kind of standing back with Ty and Carlos around. We have to get him to where he is more assertive because he has a very high skill set. He hasn’t tapped into his full potential. We are hoping we can get him there sooner than later.”
With his team [player_tooltip player_id='2324195' first='Mason' last='Harriss'] was one of their best players. Some coaches would say he was their second best player. The other guy was a baseball kid, a shooter. But he was a major component to what they were doing over there. He is a day 1 starter for us.
Battle for 5th Starter
Carlos Orr, Ty Glasper, Wade Whaley, Mason Harriss Mason Harriss 6'5" | SF Gatlinburg-Pittman | 2024 TN will start.
“That fifth one is going to be a battle between all of those seniors that I named and those newcomers. I don’t know where that will shake out. Because those other [starters] are so versatile, with the exception of Ty I can play them 2-5, if I need them.”
Seniors
Cam Richardson is an undersized post for us. Plays a lot bigger than what he is. He can help us. Seth Sutton is another senior that will help us at the wing spot. Lucas Erozan is another senior that is going to be our backup point guard. We have a shooter, another senior, that plays in a limited role. His name is Ethan Reagan. He is ready to go. Javier Francis.
Freshmen
Roger Matute Roger Matute 5'9" | SG Gatlinburg-Pittman | 2027 State TN is a guard that I think will help us. We have another freshman Jeremiah Anderson that I think will help us, as well. Has some talent. He just moved here from Georgia.
