The Tornadoes have a veteran coach, a stud player coming back from injury, and some young intriguing talent. See below for an in-depth look at the Tornadoes…
Centerville’s head coach is Bill Marquardt, the 2023-24 season will be his 3rd year with the Tornadoes. This will be coach Marquardt’s 36th season as a head coach and his career record is 487-275. Marquardt is a graduate of Northern State and SDSU.
This past season, the Tornadoes averaged 53 points per game and their opponents averaged 52. This season, the Tornadoes will look to run in transition when the opportunity is there but also have patience with their half-court offense. Expect Centerville to be primarily a man-to-man team on the defensive end.
Class: B
Region: 4
Conference: Great Plains
Tornadoes Assistant Coach: Heath Marshall
Centerville’s Rival Schools: Viborg-Hurley, Irene-Wakonda, Alcester-Hudson, Gayville-Volin
Key Losses After Last Season: Graduated leading scorer (Logan Bobzin). They also lost two key players via transfers (Luke Knight & Bosche Knight).
Tornadoes Roster – Returning Lettermen
Cole Edberg Cole Edberg 6'1" | SF Centerville | 2024 State SD (2024) |6’1 F| – Suffered a season-ending injury last December. Edberg’s sophomore season he averaged 10 ppg, and 6 rpg. He should lead the team in rebounds and put up points inside & out. He is a smart and composed player. How well and how soon Cole recovers is a key to Centerville’s 2024 season.
Aiden Bobzin Aiden Bobzin 6'0" | PG Centerville | 2025 State SD (2025) |5’10 PG| – 9 ppg and 2 apg, Aiden started every game as the point guard last season. He had a breakout sophomore season and should be ready for a big junior year. Bobzin can score and distribute the rock. He does need to improve defensively if he wants to take the next step.
Alec Austin Alec Austin 6'2" | PF Centerville | 2026 State SD (2026) |6’2 F| – 7 ppg and 4.5 rpg, Austin was a full-time starter as a 9th grader. Alec is solid fundamentally and he will need to score inside for the Tornadoes. Austin is a skilled and coachable player. He plays with great effort every day on the court.
Covin Wattier (2024) |5’11 G| – He makes a difference as an athlete and hard worker. Warrier has the potential to be a defensive stopper.
Brennan Tople (2025) |6’1 F| – 6 PPG last season. Tople really stepped up after Edberg went down with an injury. Covin is a good rebounder and has improved his game on the offensive end of the floor.
Miles Eide (2025) |5’10 G| – He is a combo-guard who played a lot of minutes as a sophomore. Miles has improved his ball handling and shooting. Eide works hard and he is a tough defender.
Jase Brouwer (2025) |5’10 G/F| – He is a smart ball player. Centerville needs Jase to improve physically and to become more of a consistent shooter.
Up-and-Comers
Ethan Bobzin Ethan Bobzin 5'11" | SG Centerville | 2027 State SD (2027) |5’11 G/F| – This youngster played some varsity minutes as an 8th grader. Ethan can score, defend, and rebound. You should expect Bobzin to play a big role as a 9th grader.
Corbin Tople (2026) |5’11 G/F| – He is a good shooter and needs to play with more intensity.
Tucker Martz Tucker Martz 6'0" | SF Centerville | 2027 State SD (2027) |6’0 F| – He had a solid JV season as an 8th grader. Corbin is a fundamental player who can defend and rebound.
Team Comments from coach Marquardt
“We lost two All-Conference players to graduation and transfer. We’ll need a lot of players to take a step forward this winter to be able to match the offensive improvement we saw last year. We do return three starters and have some candidates ready to move up.“
“ Cole Edberg Cole Edberg 6'1" | SF Centerville | 2024 State SD ‘s injury last year really hurt us offensively, defensively, and on the boards. His return is critical to our 2023-2024 season. Size and depth will again be problematic. We gave up more points defensively from the year before, and losing Luke Knight magnifies that concern. We have to see major improvement on that end. We do return three starters though, and have several young kids with the potential to make us better.“
Season Predictions from coach Marquardt
Great Plains Conference: “Tripp-DelmontArmour and Alcester-Hudson are the favorites. OTHER TEAMS: Freeman AcademyMarion, Gayville-Volin, ACDC, Marty, Scotland, Colome, Avon, Burke, CorsicaStickney, Centerville.“
Region 5B: “Viborg-Hurley lost several key players, but they will be the heavy favorite in Region 4, The rest of us will all feel like we have a chance to win a post-season game or two. OTHER TEAMS: Gayville-Volin, Alcester-Hudson, Freeman, Menno, Scotland, Centerville.“
Schedule: “We have the Parkston and DWU Classics on our schedule again. Viborg-Hurley will be a top 5 team, and Dells St. Mary and Canistota will be good again. Alcester-Hudson returns all five starters from an improved team.“
