It’s never too early to start thinking about high school ball, and the fall is the perfect time to take into account our grassroots observations from the summer and determine who some of the best players in each conference are going to be. We stick in the Triad area to cover the Mid-State 3A conference, a deep league with the likes of SE Guilford, Ben L Smith, and a new coach at Atkins. With a lot of competition and talent, we preview our preseason picks for the conference’s all-conference team below.

Dawkins is an explosive athlete that is quickly getting better and better by the day. A lefty with great size, he’s got crafty moves and great touch around the rim that allows him to bypass rim defenders and do what he pleases at the basket. Also has a consistent and smooth looking jumper that can be relied on. Has good defensive instincts and length to guard the ball and when he’s off the ball, he can step in passing lanes.

Last Season Stats (Grimsley) – 13.2 PPG, 4.2 RPG, 48% FG
Bumpass is a gifted scorer who does it efficiently with volume and should be in line to be a huge player for the Golden Eagles in his senior year. He is so in control whenever he looks to score the ball, quickly breaking down defenders without wasted dribbles or movements. Solid perimeter shooter that’s getting better, but does his best work inside the arc. Really knows how to attack from isolation situations and just put the ball in the basket.

Love is a real high flyer that attacks the rim with power on offense consistently each game. He’s got great vertical pop to be able to either drive the basket or just catch and dunk the ball off two feet. Also a good cutter who has great feel for when to back cut and burn to the basket to find a lob or bounce pass from his point guard. Defensively is a good rim protector and interior presence that keeps opposing players from attacking the rim effectively.

Ferere is an isolation scorer that has a great handle and ability to take guys off the dribble for his positional size. Isolation heavy scorer who really uses his change of pace and burst to get defenders off balance and allow him to get open shots. He shoots it pretty well and has a jumper with good looking form that should only get better as time goes on. His size allows him to be versatile on both ends of the floor and guard multiple positions as well. Look for Southern Guilford and him to have a big senior year.

Last Season Stats – 8.6 PPG, 1.3 APG, 22 3PM
Jones is ready to take an elevated role for Dudley this season as he’s continued to improve in leaps and bounds this summer. He’s got a clip, especially from deep range which is something many others cannot say they have. You’ve got to guard him from the volleyball line in or else he’ll make you pay. Also has a tight handle and developing playmaking skills to go with his off ball shooting. With those coming along, expect him to become a dynamic combo guard quickly.
Last Season Stats – N/A
Lattimore is a name we need to move up our board soon, especially after an impressive grassroots summer. He’ll be returning to be the lead threat at Ben L Smith as a long, lefty guard that is a threat from the perimeter scoring, but also really looks to create and involve his teammates with the ball in his hands. Capable defender when he uses his length to his advantage. Picked up an offer from Elizabeth City State in June and should see more coming in soon.

Roope is a high academic winner that just received his first offer to Dean College, with more to hopefully come. He’s a knockdown shooter with a quick trigger that makes it difficult for defenses to hone in on when he’ll shoot. He can get to pull-ups or shoot it off the bounce as well, further complicating things. Crafty guy who can play out of the post, isolation, and facing up which really varies his game. Solid on defense with quick feet that allows him to stay in front of people.

Last Season Stats (SE Guilford) – 9.6 PPG, 4.2 RPG, 3.5 APG
Big 2 guard/wing that makes things happen when he’s in the game. He’s got so much energy that allows him to come right in and control the tempo of the contest. Athletic and long, he is a two way threat that puts those natural gifts to his advantage. Good body control around the rim and finds teammates with good vision. Defensively looks to harass opposing players and just make their life difficult as much as he can.
