The event featured high level competition and great games, as well as prospects for colleges of all levels moving forward.
Here’s a look at part three of some of the top 2024 performers from the VA schools at the event.
Alex Chaikin Alex Chaikin 6'4" | SG Trinity Episcopal | 2024 State VA | 6’4′ WG | Trinity Episcopal
Chaikin is the top returner for TES this year who looks like they’ll have a turn around season this year, and he looks like one of the top available prospects in the Richmond area. The 6’4” wing is coming off a strong summer where he picked up quite a few offers, and he’s playing with tons of confidence right now and looking to be the go-to guy this year. He’s a dead eye shooter from deep with great form and deep range, he can put it on the deck and attack closeouts and he’s a finesse finisher with both hands around the rim.
Rodney Ekwoanya Rodney Ekwoanya 6'5" | SF Evergreen Christian | 2024 State VA | 6’6” F | Evergreen Christian
Ekwoanya is part of an underrated and very athletic Evergreen front court that will give a lot of trouble to teams this year, and he showed why he’s one of the more underrated available players in the DMV right now. At 6’6” he’s a hybrid forward who’s a walking mismatch as he’s athletic and gets up and down the floor, and he can put it on the deck in straight lines and get to the rim where he’s an athletic finisher. With his length he’s able to play and guard multiple positions, and he’s an inside-out threat who is productive as a scorer and a rebounder too.
Josiah Rickards Josiah Rickards 6'3" | CG Catholic | 2024 State VA | 6’3” CG | CBG Select
Rickards put on a show playing with one of the CBG teams as the Catholic guard showed why he’s one of the best in the 757 and that he’s ready to lead this very talented group to another deep run in the state playoffs this year. The 6’3” combo was lights out in their two games as he knocked down shots from deep at a very high clip, and he showed his ability to move on the ball and create space to make shots late in shot clock situations. He showed good poise and was an unselfish playmaker, while also showing his deep bag of tough shots from all over the floor he’s able to make.
Brayden Thorne Brayden Thorne 6'1" | PG Catholic | 2024 State VA | 6’1” PG | CBG Select
Thorne will be one of Rickards’ running mates with Catholic this season, and he showed why they’ll be one of the top backcourts in the state. Thorne is an all-around guard who is strong and very smart running the show, as he is able to set the tone defensively and does a good job handling pressure and controlling the tempo as well. He used his ability to change speeds to get by defenders and get to spots to make plays for himself and others, and he showed his ability to knock down shots off the catch when he’s open too.
MJ Winstead | 6’0” PG | CBG Select
Winstead was impressive in the first session with CBG Elite, and he did it again during session 2 as he showed his floor general intangibles while making plays on both sides of the ball. He’s one of the smartest and most fundamental players you’ll come across, as he’s equally effective attacking going either way and he always seems to be making the right decision. He has great vision and control of the game, he can knock down shots coming off ball screens and he is a good finisher when he gets downhill too.
Jayden Harris | 6’7” WF | CBG Elite
Harris came back for session two after being a standout in session one, and once again he scored the ball very well and showed he could be one of the top players in post grad basketball this year. The 6’7” wing who was a standout at Potomac High School has improved so much throughout his high school career, and his versatility at his size makes him very intriguing as a prospect moving forward. He has a strong frame and is good at getting to spots off the bounce to make tough shots, he can make shots from deep off the catch and off the bounce and he can handle and make plays in transition.
Stark Jones | 6’3” CG | CBG Elite
Jones had a very good showing at Session 2, as the Massanutten guard was one of the top scorers for CBG Elite and showed his two way impact as well. The strong and athletic guard got out in transition and played above the rim, he made shots from all three levels and showed his microwave ability as a scorer and he was active and made plays defensively and on the glass. He’s going to be an x-factor for his Massanutten group this year with his consistent production and the high motor he plays with.
