They have performed well on the shoe circuits and in other avenues like the Prep Hoops circuit tournaments. With the teams playing with their high schools this month, there should be some opportunities to see the various top guards in each class from north to south. In this Prep Hoops Louisiana exclusive, we will look at some of the top guards in the ’24 and ’25 classes.
Kohen Rowbatham Kohen Rowbatham 6'1" | CG St. Thomas Aquinas | 2024 State LA (2024 | 6’1″ | LivOn Fleur de Lis/Northshore)
Rowbatham is the most aggressive point guard you will see all summer. He is a heady guard who likes to finish at the rim more times than not. Rowbatham is very good at absorbing contact when driving to the cup and is as accurate as they get from the charity strip. Rowbatham is a three level scorer so he can beat teams from the mid-range or from deep. He has various tricks up his sleeve as well that make him hard to guard.
Jayce Depron Jayce Depron 7'5" | CG Madison Prep | 2024 State LA (2024 | 6’4″ | LA Elite/Madison Prep)
The two guard from Baton Rouge is a player who is hard to stop when it comes to scoring. He has the ability to drive to the rack, nail jumpers from three, and has enough lift to complete mid-range jumpers with little to no contest. Depron is also a hound on the defensive end. He can cause turnovers using his length. Depron is a good two-way player and will be a guard highly sought after from the Boot.
Rondae Hill (2024 | 5’11” | O.W.E./Calvary Baptist)
One player that has played on another level during travel tournaments and UA Rise has been Rondae Hill. He has shown the ability to get into the lane with ease due to his speed and has learned to take contact and still finish. While he is still streaky from deep, he is one who will nail a timely three or jump shot. Defensively, Hill is turning into a steal artist as well. He should have plenty of success during UA Rise.
Xavier Ferguson Xavier Ferguson 6'2" | CG Zachary | 2025 State #322 Nation LA (2025 | 6’2″ | LA Elite/Zachary)
Last year on the Prep Hoops circuit, Ferguson was one of the best players from Louisiana. Fast forward to this year and he is making a mark on the New Balance circuit also. He has displayed the ability to get to the rim with the dribble or by cutting as well as a tenacity on defense. Ferguson can drive to the rim using either hand and is almost a lock to finish at the goal. His game is ever-evolving.
Turner Duncan Turner Duncan 6'3" | PG St. Augustine | 2024 State LA (2024 | 6’3″ | New Orleans Elite/St. Augustine)
Turner Duncan Turner Duncan 6'3" | PG St. Augustine | 2024 State LA is a player who is making it happen on the court playing on the Adidas circuit. It looks like Duncan has stopped settling for his silky smooth jumper and is going to the hoop more. His attacks on the rim make him a more dangerous person on the court. With his offensive ability, he can give teams big problems. He is a tough player to guard at any level.
Lantavious Murphy Lantavious Murphy 6'3" | SG Rayville | 2025 State LA (2025 | 6’3″ | C&S Hoopstars/Rayville)
Murphy has been one of the best players on any circuit in April and May. He has shown that he is a three level score who can score and defend. He can defend the best player on the floor while getting his either by working on the boards and cutting or shooting from the perimeter. Murphy can hurt teams in various ways and may be a shoe circuit pick up when it comes to the month of July.
Look for other guards in these two classes to perform at a high level also as the players play with their high school teams in June before they head back on the road.
