The rising senior from Beaverton High School still knows he’s got a way to go with everything, especially if he wants to reach his college basketball goals. But there’s no question he’s happy about how things have already come along, and that goes back to this past season, his first with the Beavers.
“I loved it,” Winter said. “Obviously didn’t pan out the way we wanted to at the end, but it was such an honor to be able to play under (Coach) Vancil and play the way we played and have the teammates that I played with. I’ve moved strides from where I was my sophomore year, and if you were to look at me after sophomore year and look at me junior year, I think you’d totally different person.”
Before Beaverton Winter was at Glencoe where he made his mark defensively, leading all of 6A in blocked shots per game. Since shifting to the Beavers, he’s worked on not only further developing his body but also his offensive game, and ended up averaging 6.9 points on 64 percent field goal shooting in 2022-23. The progression has continued this spring as Winter switched up his club plans and is playing with Idaho Select on the adidas circuit against high-level competition.
“It’s going great – I’m all around the country getting in front of a lot of coaches, getting a lot of looks and I’m really excited,” Winter said. “I’m really trying to showcase being big, getting stronger down low, definitely showing that I can post up and then playing above the rim is my specialty. So I’m definitely showcasing that.”
As a result of his play, Winter has started to generate college basketball interest. “It’s really an honor to have these coaches and have them watch me play,” Winter said. “Boise State, Weber State, Portland State, and Montana State are the big four that are talking to me consistently. I’m very honored that they’re talking to me and showing interest. I want to play at the D-I level, so that’s my goal right now is the broad spectrum of Division One basketball.”
One school of note is Boise State, of which his mother set the school’s all-time leading blocked shots record for the women’s basketball team. That’s not the only connection to the school either, but Winter maintains that he’s keeping things open in the process so far.
“My coach actually, for Idaho Select, played on the boys basketball team at Boise State at the same time that my mom did,” Winter said. “So Boise State definitely heard from my mom, heard from my coach, so they’re excited to talk to me and have me out there. But once I find the school that I love, I think that it could be an early signing.”
Winter currently ranks as the #24 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2024 rankings.
