DJ Washington
Dj Washington was a big time difference maker for his team in their Saturday contest against Calumet City, hitting 4 threes beyond the arc to swing the momentum and give his One Dream squad a much needed boost. Washington also has great awareness of where to go on the defensive end of the court, never afraid to be physical with his matchup and notching several steals pushing the tempo in the process. I would compare DJ with a Klay Thompson type player as he is most effective on the catch and shoot from three, but he could develop into more of a shoot off the dribble hooper. Washington finished the victory against Calumet with 15 points, including 3/4 from the three point arc. DJ is very vocal on defense and possesses the confidence needed to score if his team needs a bucket or he can display his unselfishness by running the pick and roll with a teammate. The bottom line is Washington can hurt a defense at all three levels of the floor, but he is most effective when he is spotting up behind the line.
Mason played an effective role as a post player for his squad on Saturday against a guard-central Point Five Academy. Delaney showed he can hurt a defense with his back to the basket or facing up for a jumper as a dual threat player. He had several opportunities where he attacked the basket with great force and was met with either a foul or severe contact and still finished the bucket. Delaney finished shooting from the floor on 7/9 under the basket and also made a couple free throws in the process for 15 points. The main point to take away from Mason’s game is that he can play a very unselfish big man style of basketball or if he is isolated in the post, the defense better man up. You don’t see many dual threat players like this too often!
Brandon Brown
Brandon Brown
Brandon was virtually unstoppable for BCH Elite in their Saturday afternoon game against Hoop Lovers Inc. No one on defense could stay in front of Brown as he continually bullied his way to the basket and finished with an easy layup every time. Brandon proved he can also knock down a midrange jumper with ease as the defenders left him space often once they discovered his driving ability. One part of Brandon’s game I really enjoy is his contagious energy that he plays with, always firing his teammates up and staying positive. This is a factor that many coaches take into account, especially at the next level. Brown finished the blowout victory against Hoop Lovers with 12 points and 6 rebounds.
Phillip Prather
Phillip Prather
Phillip showed a lot of potential in the first game of the tournament for his SA Proskills squad, starting off right with a win over North Houston Hustle National. Prather was physical on defense, hounding his man for a total of 4 steals in the contest and often dishing to an open teammate up the court for an easy fastbreak layup and assist. Prather was effective when he was able to get the free throw line as well, hitting all 4 of his attempts and helping his team cruise to a 15 point win to open Space City Collision on Saturday. Phillip shows a lot of heart when he is on the court and that is something no one will ever be able to take away from him and he will continue to polish his game as the grassroots season continues on. Phillip finished with 14 points in the 59-45 win for Proskills SA.
Jake Polson
Jake Polson
Polson was a big time facilitator in his teams dominant win over Shine Elite on Saturday afternoon. Polson attacked the basket with ease and finished at the rim over tight defense as well as scoring several points from the free throw line and knocking down jumpers from the midrange area. Jake was also a willing playmaker as he never hesitated to make the extra pass when necessary and got several assists off wide open shots from teammates knocking down shots. Jake will be a total big moment player for this Badboys squad as he figures to be one of the leaders on this young team. Despite getting beat up pretty good physically in this contest, he put on a strong performance and finished with 17 points, 6 assists, and 7 rebounds. Look for Polson’s upside to continue to shine through in future tournaments this summer!!
