The event was loaded with talent and players who were ready to impress. Each game had highlight worthy plays, and players looking to prove their team was worthy of a Championship Title. Although there can only be one champion there was no shortage of intensity throughout the weekend. The Midwest Melee had one of if not the best talents thus far on the circuit. Below, I highlighted “Day 2 Guard Standouts” that I watched at the Centre of Elgin.
Jace Nelson |F| Kessel Heat
Nelson was an explosive wing for Kessel Heat, he filled up the rebound column with ease due to the combination of height, speed, and athleticism. He was hard to stop once he got a head of steam to the basket. His range of skills allowed him to wear many hats for the talented Kessel Heat team.
Willie Roelofs |F| Team Tyus
Roelofs was a solid target and methodical scorer for Team Tyus. The lengthy forward did his damage in the mid and high post area as a scorer and facilitator. His height allowed him to locate teammates as well as see the rim and show off his soft touch. Roelofs was a consistent contributor in the rebound category as well.
Duke Ross |F| LVL
Ross had a balanced attack for the LVL, he seemed to provide whatever his team needed from him. The well-rounded wing showed toughness one play and skill the next. He was at his best spacing the floor and knocking down timely threes. Ross had a great showing for LVL.
Jaedin Williams |F| Team Tyus
Williams was a versatile scorer and reliable playmaker on day 2 for a deep Team Tyus team. The lengthy wing was able to see over defenders when breaking full court pressure and finding teammates after gaining the numbers advantage. His athleticism allowed him to finish at the rim. Most surprising was his ability to heat up in catch and shoot situations.
Owen Kirby |F| Team Illinois
Kirby is a lengthy forward with guard-like skills and a high IQ for Team Illinois. The shifty forward ran the floor well and proved to be a reliable secondary facilitator who found cutting and drifting teammates. His activity in passing lanes and shot altering added to his value to a strong Team Illinois squad.
