The Prep Hoops Circuit kicked off another year in Grand Rapids. Among a small but deep field there was a lot of individual talent. Following are a breakdown gamechanging performance from Sunday’s action
Evan Haverkamp Evan Haverkamp 6'9" | PF McBain | 2024 State MI 6-7 2024 McBain Full disclosure. I try not to write about players on consecutive days. However when you play like this post did on Sunday— I’m not left with much of a choice. When you post a double double along with the game winning tip near the buzzer. That is the definition of a “gamechanger”. Did this against tough London Ramblers squad out of Canada. Is a prototypical “old school” post. Might have attracted more recruiting attention a decade or two ago. Both don’t let that description fool you. Is mobile and has good overall ball skills. Should make a small college (or possibly bigger) coach happy at the next level.
Trevor Turnbull Trevor Turnbull 6'2" | PG Nordonia | 2025 OH 6-2 2025 Nordonia (OH) Point guard with good size led DG Warriors to an undefeated record on the weekend. Standout game was the finale against a good Battle Creek Bulldawgz backcourt. Controlled the tempo of the game and finished with 22 points. Good ball handler who plays with his head up. Seemed to have a nose for the ball defensively. Picked up a lot of loose balls. Was able to start the break quickly off of steals.
Craig Hureskin Craig Hureskin 6'1" | SG Ottawa Hills | 2024 State MI Jr 6-1 2024 Grand Rapids Ottawa Hills Huereskin was a bucket all weekend. Engaged in an instant classic OT battle with BNB Basketball in the second to last game of the tourney. Finished with 21 points in the buzzer beating overtime loss. Did this all while facing near total denial defense and dealing with leg cramps. It was a gutty performance. Scored both at the rim and from beyond the arc. Should form a dynamic backcourt next year at Ottawa Hills with Alphonse Sanders who he is shared a backcourt with this weekend for All In Sports. They should also add Derrick King Jr to form a trio with a lot of firepower.
Austin Burns 6-4 2025 Marshall It was nearing dinner time. The staff was putting away equipment and there was only one game left on the schedule. Within said game Burns’ Truth Sports was facing a second half deficit. It would have been easy for a team to shut things down. Burns was having none of it. Keyed a comeback with defense down low. Felt like he contested every shot. Scored 14 points in the victory. Including four critical points in overtime. This came on the heels of a near double to start the day. Posted seven points and 10 rebounds in a win over LOUD Academy. However once again the story was the defense. Has five blocks in that contest. Long lanky frame helps defensively. Allows him to seemingly play bigger than his listed height. Did all this playing up an age group as well. Bright future for this program and prospect.
Isaiah Ashford 5-8 2025 Hamtramck Ashford’s Detroit Bulldogs squad dealt with injuries on the weekend and did not have the results they had hoped for. However Ashford kept coming all weekend. Especially in the final contest on Sunday. Started off strong against a good REAL unit that featured a good backcourt. Quickness allowed him to get to basket effectively. Left handed but was able to go either way. Not very big. Will need to add strength to finish at the rim off of penetration. Finished with 12 points but could have been more. Was a good kick out passer. Particularly to 2026 prospect Hunter Durand Hunter Durand SG Rochester Adams | 2026 State MI . Durand finished with a team high 16 while playing up an age group. Ashford has some work to do to get into Hamtramck’s crowded backcourt rotation. Is off to a good start with his play this weekend.
