The Prep Hoops Circuit got underway this weekend all across the country and the PH Grind Region Kickoff took place in the Oklahoma City area. Prep Hoops had wall to wall coverage of the event and we’ll continue to crank out player spotlight articles over the next several days. But in this post, it’s all about the 17U division and we saw some unsigned seniors out there putting in work, still looking for an opportunity to play at the next level. We put a spotlight on several senior prospects that played well throughout the weekend. This post does not feature Jack Bommarito, who was featured on Monday as part of the 17U All Tourney Team. These three players all had strong weekends.
Breylon Owens Breylon Owens 6'4" | SG Anadarko | 2023 State OK – Guard – Anadarko – Oklahoma Wolfpack
Arguably the most well known unsigned senior in attendance, at least for Oklahoma prospects, was Anadarko senior Breylon Owens Breylon Owens 6'4" | SG Anadarko | 2023 State OK as he suited up for one of the Oklahoma Wolfpack squads. Owens had an outstanding career at Anadarko and it was good to see him on the court at least one more time this past weekend. Owens had a strong showing as he was routinely one of the better athletes on the floor. And the thing that really stood out to me about Owens was his performance on Sunday. And that goes for the rest of the starting five for the Wolfpack. They played two games Sunday with only five players. Owens was one of them and if he was tired, he never looked like it as he was always in the mix on both sides of the ball. The Wolfpack had a few other prospects that shined that we’ll get into later this week but Owens definitely belonged on this breakdown as arguably the best unsigned senior from Oklahoma in attendance.
Carter Carbonell – Guard – Norman North – I Am 3 Prospects
Norman North senior guard Carter Carbonell recently announced that he was reclassifying to the 2024 class and attending a prep school in Missouri in the fall. With that, Carbonell joined the I AM 3 Prospects unsigned senior team that also featured Bommarito, who was on the 17U All Tourney team. Carbonell was one of the best shooters in attendance this weekend as the Norman North product was pulling from all over the floor and he was lighting it up from beyond the arc. He had a game on Saturday where he poured in six shots from the perimeter and he made it look easy. As they closed out the tournament on Sunday, I had a front row seat to watching him shoot and there’s a lot to like about the smoothness of the jumper. Just like every prospect on this particular post, it’s going to be interesting to see how Carbonell does the rest of this offseason. He was definitely one of the best shooters this weekend.
Thai Bond – Forward – Mustang – 405 BadBoyz
On Saturday afternoon, one of the first players that stood out to me was Mustang senior Thai Bond, who was playing with the 405 Bad Boyz, a team similar to Carbonell’s team, featuring unsigned seniors. Bond had a really good game as he finished with a game-high 20 points. He’s been a player that I have seen on the Prep Hoops Circuit for the last year now at various events and this weekend might have been the best that we’ve seen him. He’s an undersized forward that did a good job of really controlling the paint in the game that I watched. It looks like he put up some good numbers and had a good weekend, which is no surprise considering the impact he had on the game I was watching. We’re curious how many more tournaments he’s going to play in this offseason and if the improvement we saw this weekend will continue throughout the spring and summer.
