Top-ranked Fort Cobb-Broxton came into the state tournament last week as the favorites to capture another gold ball. The Mustangs would go on to win another state championship, adding another gold ball to their impressive trophy case. And just like in Class A, it was a junior that led the top-ranked team to a state championship this season. In this post, we take a look at some of the top performers from the state tournament with our All Tournament Team selections, along with the pick for Most Valuable Player.
Kray Rogers – Fort Cobb-Broxton (MVP)
Fort Cobb-Broxton captured another state championship and it was junior guard Kray Rogers that led them to the gold ball, averaging nearly 14 points per game. Unlike other championship seasons when the Mustangs had a superstar that carried them to the state title, Rogers was the best player on the floor but he had plenty of help around him. Rogers had a really good shooting performance in the first two days of the tournament but it was a complete team performance that helped Fort Cobb-Broxton to this championship. For instance, freshman Eli Willits had the game-winning layup in the quarterfinal round. With Rogers returning next season, we have to have the Mustangs as the early favorites once again when you talk about the 2023-2024 season.
Dalton Belcher – Calumet
Calumet would have to settle for the silver ball this season as they came up short against Fort Cobb-Broxton in the state championship game. Junior Dalton Belcher was outstanding throughout the three days in Oklahoma City. He would average 15 points per game throughout the tournament and was incredibly consistent throughout the state tourney. Belcher led a Calumet squad that had been balanced all season and was a rare small school that could go ten-deep in their various lineups on the floor.
Jace Hunter – Buffalo Valley
Buffalo Valley had their season come to an end in the quarterfinal round on Thursday but their senior star Jace Hunter went out with a bang on Thursday. Hunter would finish with 25 points in the quarterfinal loss to Kinta. Hunter was outstanding in the first half and down the stretch as they would attempt a comeback bid late. But foul trouble would sideline Hunter for big moments in the third quarter. Hunter has a future on the baseball field but he showed he was one of the top basketball players in Class B this season.
Terry Vealy – Kinta
Kinta had a couple players that could have earned a spot on this breakdown but the slightest of edges goes to their senior guard Terry Vealy, who led them in scoring in their quarterfinal win over Buffalo Valley on Thursday. Vealy was also very efficient on the offensive end of the floor on Friday as they came up short in the semifinal round. Vealy did a little bit of everything well for Kinta. He could drive and finish at the basket and was just as dangerous pulling up and knocking down jumpers. He had a strong showing.
Tre’ Speer – Glencoe
Defending champion Glencoe would fall to the eventual champions in Fort Cobb-Broxton on Friday in the semifinals. But senior Tre’ Speer went out swinging as the Panthers could never find their groove as a team on the offensive end of the floor. But Speer absolutely carried them in the first half as he was their leading scorer and would finish with 20+ points. Speer would average around 17 points per game during the state tourney but it was his performance in that semifinal that earns him a spot here as the champs would come up short on a repeat.
