Rob’s 1A/2A Postseason Recap 2-19-23

IOWA CITY, Iowa – After weather delays this week, we have reached the district finals in Classes 1A and 2A. Second-round action wrapped up around the state Saturday.

Here’s a look at what went down:

-Montezuma (16-6) advanced to the 1A District 9 final with a 72-61 victory at Moravia Saturday afternoon. The Braves moved on to meet No. 8 Baxter, 68-46 victors against Sigourney on Friday.

Freshman Brady Boulton Brady Boulton 5'8" | PG Montezuma | 2026 State IA led Montezuma with 26 points (10-16 FG, 4-5 3PT FG) and six assists without a turnover against Moravia. Senior Gavin Strong chipped in with 24 points and four assists, and classmate Masin Shearer Masin Shearer 5'8" | PG Montezuma | 2023 State IA notched 12 points, seven rebounds and two steals in the win.

-Exira-EHK (19-4) is heading to the 1A District 15 title game after topping Woodbine, 70-50, on Saturday. The Spartans were set to meet No. 4 West Harrison (21-1), 72-35 winners against West Monona Thursday.

Senior Trey Petersen scored 18 points (6-6 FG, 5-5 3PT FG) in Exira-EHK’s win against Woodbine. Cash Emgarten Cash Emgarten 6'3" Exira EHK | 2024 IA , a junior, added 14 and senior Derrek Kommes had 12 for the Spartans.

-Coon Rapids-Bayard (14-9) went on the road Saturday and took down Ankeny Christian, 59-54, in 1A District 14 play. In Tuesday’s final, the Crusaders will take on ACGC, 78-64, winners against IKM-Manning on Friday.

Freshman Cal Heydon Cal Heydon 6'4" | SF Coon Rapids-Bayard | 2026 State IA dropped 29 points for Coon Rapids-Bayard Saturday with senior Lance Clayburg scoring 14, grabbing 10 rebounds, swiping six steals and blocking two shots for the victors.

-Lenox (14-9) survived Saturday with a 73-62 triumph against visiting Stanton. The Tigers advanced to meet top-ranked Grandview Christian in Tuesday’s championship.

Sophomore Gabe Funk’s 18.8 points and 9.3 rebounds per game have been tops for Lenox this season. Senior Keaton England has been averaging 15.4 points for the Tigers.

-Des Moines Christian (22-0) moved on to play Lenox with 86-38 victory against Earlham Saturday. Senior Josh Sanderson Josh Sanderson 5'10" | PG Grand View Christian | 2023 State IA has been scoring 19.3 points for the No. 1 Thunder this campaign with classmate Daniel Tobiloba Daniel Tobiloba 7'0" | C Grand View Christian | 2023 State IA chipping in with 12.9 points and 13.5 boards.

-In 1A District 16, East Mills (21-3) advanced to Tuesday’s final with a 63-60 win Saturday against Tri-Center. The Wolverines were set to meet Bedford, 67-53 winners against Sidney Thursday.

Senior Braden West Braden West 6'5" | SF East Mills | 2023 State IA ‘s 26 points led the way for East Mills against Tri-Center. His classmate, Mason Crouse Mason Crouse 6'1" | SF East Mills | 2023 State IA , added 11 points, nine rebounds and three assists.

-In 2A District 4, Kuemper Catholic (16-6) took momentum into the final with a 80-51 victory against Greene County Saturday. The Knights advanced to face OABCIG, who topped Manson-NW Webster on Thursday.

Junior Michael Kasperbauer Michael Kasperbauer 5'11" | PG Kuemper Catholic | 2024 State IA has averaged 13.7 points and 2.0 assists this season for Kuemper Catholic. Dawson Gifford Dawson Gifford 6'0" | SG Kuemper Catholic | 2023 State IA , a senior, has contributed 10.9 points and 2.7 assists, and junior Evan Adams’s 5.2 rebounds have been tops on the team.

-Jesup eliminated Cascade, 63-46, Saturday night in 2A District 5. The J-Hawks (15-6) moved on to meet up with third-ranked Aplington-Parkersburg in Tuesday’s title game.

Junior Jack Miller Jack Miller 6'1" | PG Jesup | 2024 State IA netted 22 points and grabbed seven rebounds in Jesup’s semifinal victory. Senior Brevin Dahl added 16 points, six rebounds and four assists for the winners, while teammate Cale Schissel, a junior, chipped in 13 points and three assists.
