These two schools are 3.5 hours away from each other, so I am sure they are not too familiar. It was an entertaining game from tip-off to the last buzzer sounding. Canton was in control the entire contest, but the Pirates kept it close, battled all game, and they made it interesting down the stretch. It was also a historic game for a Canton player. Jacob Vandeweerd Jacob Vandeweerd 6'8" | PF Canton | 2023 State SD scored his 1,000 career point! That is an impressive accomplishment. Canton C-Hawks
Derek Tieszen Derek Tieszen 6'1" | CG Canton | 2023 State SD (2023) |6’2 G|
12 points, 2 triples. In the next game or so, Tieszen will break the All-Time Assist Record at Canton. He moves the ball well, swings it quickly, and he makes the easy pass. Derek pushes the tempo with his foot to the floor. He is creative and unselfish in transition. I like how he is always pushing the ball up the floor with the dribble or the pass. On one occasion, Derek was dribbling up the court, shook the D, and delivered a beautiful dime to a cutting teammate. He also threw some beautiful 3/4 court passes that landed right on target. Tieszen can certainly thread the needle! Derek hit both of his triples from the coffin corner. He also had an impressive slash across the lane and he finished over the front of the rim. Tieszen was impressive today and I am not surprised that he will break the assist record at Canton.
Jacob Vandeweerd Jacob Vandeweerd 6'8" | PF Canton | 2023 State SD (2023) |6’8 C|
16 points, 4/4 FT’s. Jacob scored his 1,000th career point today! He stood out to me as a strong rebounder. He throws crisp outlet passes and he protects the rim. Jacob is also a willing passer out of the post. He is fantastic at finishing with either hand. Jacob does great work at pinning/sealing his defender. He showed a soft fall-away jumper that he finished with a kiss off the glass. He put in multiple finger rolls, a sweet baby hook, and a deadly mid-range jumper. Jacob is a versatile offensive threat and he is a difficult matchup with his height/size.
Braxton Mulder Braxton Mulder 6'3" | PG Canton | 2024 State SD (2024) |6’3 G|
12 points, 2 triples, 2/4 FT’s. His first triple came from the left wing and his second came early in the 2nd quarter. Mulder is an active cutter and I like his aggressiveness. Much like Tieszen, Braxton pushes hard in transition and he plays fast. Mulder had multiple impressive 3/4 court passes. When finishing at the rim, Braxton has impressive body control. He scored multiple times in traffic. From the perimeter, he has a quick and smooth shot. I loved when he was driving to the rim, Mulder drew a help defender, instead of forcing it, he kicked out to a C-Hawks shooter and they hit the triple. He made some splashy plays but he also made the easy/smart play. I like Mulder’s game.
Matthew Anderson Matthew Anderson 6'6" Canton | 2024 SD (2024) |6’7 SF|
16 points, 1 triple, 1/2 FT’s. It was easy to see that Anderson is a premier athlete. Matt had a quiet 16 points. He does it all on the court. He created TO’s, boarded up, dove on the floor, scored from all levels, DUNKED, and took a charge. His charge came late in the game and his 2-handed WHAM was also late. Those two plays helped finish off the Pirates. He was unselfish in transtion and he found the open man when slashing. His ball skills are better than I thought. Matt threw a perfect 1-handed pass when penetrating. On defense, I thought Anderson had some great close-outs. He closed out hard but under control. Anderson chopped his feet, had a high hand, and he kept his man in front. He scored multiple times with O-board putbacks and he had an athletic tip in. He is an athletic and aggressive rebounder. Anderson attacks the ball like a predator and the basketball is his prey! I like how he finishes off two feet and he plays with a calm/confident demeanor. Anderson is a STUD and a rising star. There are big things ahead for Matthew!
Cain Wallner Cain Wallner 6'4" | SF Canton | 2025 State SD (2025) |6’4 SF|
8 points. He is well put together for a soph. Wallner impressed me with a lefty finger roll in transition. He scored more points when running the court and he looks like he can shoot it a bit. Wallner is a versatile defender and he blocked a shot.
Julius Moore Julius Moore 6'2" | CG Canton | 2024 State SD (2024) |6’1 G|
2 points. He is a fast and quick athlete. Moore stole the ball and scored in transition. He has the potential to be a pesky defender and a creative slasher.
Rylan Larson Rylan Larson 6'2" | SF Canton | 2025 State SD (2025) |6’2 F|
6 points, 2 triples. He came in the game, spotted up on the right wing, and cashed in the triple. He is good at spacing the floor and at knocking down perimeter shots.
Ryan Kuper (2024) |6’5 F|
3 points, 1 triple. He certainly passes the eye test. Kuper is long and his shot looks nice. He looks to have a fluid jump shot, Ryan makes it look easy and his motion is effortless.
Highmore-Harrold Pirates
Dawson Hale (2023) |5’9 G|
4 points, 1 triple, 1/2 FT’s. The lefty got the first basket of the game for the Pirates. Hale hit the triple from the top of the key. He also gave up his body and took a charge from Anderson.
Carson Stephenson Carson Stephenson 6'0" | PG Highmore-Harrold | 2024 State SD (2024) |6’0 G|
5 points, 1 triple. He hit his 3-pointer from the top of the key. I like how Stephenson drives to the hoop and is always looking for open teammates.
Treyton Knox Treyton Knox 6'5" | PF Highmore-Harrold | 2023 State SD (2023) |6’4 G|
16 points, 1 triple, 5/8 FT’s. He is a nice athlete with good length. He looked good when he slashed, drew contact, and scored with a soft fall-away floater. It was an AND1 score and Knox cashed in the FT for the old-school 3-point play. I was impressed when he caught, shot-faked, ripped, and exploded to the rim. Knox is gifted at drawing fouls/contact and he knows how to get to the line. His 3-ball came from the left wing in the 4th quarter. Treyton made hustle plays with a blocked shot and an athletic O-board putback.
Mason Knox (2023) |6’1 G|
14 points, 1 triple, 7/10 FT’s. He was great on the offensive glass. Mason grabbed multiple O-boards and on one of them put it back and he picked up the AND1. Mason is a crafty player and he knows how to score in traffic. He was good at drawing contact and at getting to the line. He blocked a shot on D and he hit a 3-pointer.
Bryce Bourk (2023) |6’2 G|
17 points, 3 triples, 2/4 FT’s. He hit his triples off the catch. Bourk hit one early, in the middle, and in the 4th. He looked good spotting up against the zone D and he hit a 3-pointer in the 4th from college range. He created TO’s, picked off a pass, and he made a great hustle play where he saved a ball from going out of bounds. Bourk scored buckets in transition, I like how hard he runs the court. Bryce also had an impressive finish at the rim with a BIG athlete right in his face. This kid must have excellent concentration. He battled to the end. Bryce scored in an uptempo situation with less than 30 seconds left in the game. He plays hard and gives all-out effort.
Trake Cowan Trake Cowan 6'5" | PF Highmore-Harrold | 2024 State SD (2024) |6’5 C|
11 points, 1/5 FT’s. This kid is BIG, strong, wide, and tough. He was a brute on the boards and he got his mitts on multiple offensive rebounds. Cowan had multiple AND1 buckets. Finishing through contact is not a problem! Trake plays hard and he is good at carving out space around the rim. He likes to post deep and when he gets the ball, Trake almost always goes left shoulder. Cowan has the potential to be a very nice post-player.
