LONG BEACH, Ca—As the playoffs approach, there have been a number of high-level games throughout the winter session. Intense league match-ups and an abundance of showcase events have littered the Southern California landscape. Here are some of the highlights as the playoffs approach. This post will emphasize some of the prospects in Southern California that are rising their stocks with scouts.
Reggie Caldwell (Grand Terrace, Ca)
2025, 6-foot-2, 165 pounds
Joel’s Take: This lefty point guard prospect reminds a bit of former UNC standout Kendall Marshall. He doesn’t have a great burst, but he changes speeds very well and always has his head up. He delivers the ball early in transition and possesses a nice feel for the game. While attacking he uses frame nicely and his crossover is slick to keep defenders honest. He can knock in the deep jump shot, but his release needs to speed up.
Adrionne Marcus (Rancho Dominguez)
2023, F, 6-foot-7, 170 pounds
Joel’s Take: Marcus is built like a wing, but he does most of his damage on the inside due to his pogo-stick bounce. He’s an effortless leaper who gets numerous tip-ins. He has good feet, handles it well in the open court, and he can even knock in the occasional 3-pointer. A definite sleeper whose best basketball is ahead of him.
Walker Weir (Murrietta Valley)
2023, SG, 6-foot-4, 165 pounds
Joel’s Take: Weir has all the physical traits scouts/coaches look for in a college prospect. He has an ideal frame with long arms and overall good length. He possesses a solid first step and his pull-up game is evolving. His bounce is evident in the paint area while battling the “bigs” for rebounds, but he does need to do a better job of playing through contact. In addition, extending the range on his jump shot is more consistent as a finisher will raise his stock.
Churchill Ikenador (Aquinas)
2023, G, 6-foot-2, 165 pounds
Joel’s Take: Ikenador gets good lift on his shot, has a quick release, and he sets up his shot well. He can come off a screen or shows a quick 1st step to get separation from the defender. His frame shows ideal length and overall size for the position and he plays both ends of the floor. Furthermore, his active hands are noticeable and he shows moxie due to the fact he isn’t afraid to take the high shot.
