Continue ReadingThrouhgout the winter, it’s often hard to focus in on a lot non-GHSA teams but Wilson Academy is having a season worthy of attention. They currently sit at 11-3 with notable wins over GHSA programs like South Gwinnett, St. Francis, & WD Mohammed. Their solid play has translated into momentum in recruiting as 3 of their guys picked up offers last week, Jeremiah Ruffin, Travell Anderson, and Talib Hamilton. I recently spoke with Head Coach Corey Cameron about Wilson’s recent success, both on the court and in recruiting.
Cameron contributes much of Wilson’s success this year to consistent hard work and having a group that loves to play together. This is his 3rd year at Wilson and it’s clear that the culture and winning habits that Cameron has instilled there are shining through more and more. There’s an energy and toughness that Wilson Academy plays with and makes them fun to watch. Jeremiah Ruffin, Travell Anderson, and Talib Hamilton have all bought into this and they now have opportunities to play at the next level. Coach Cameron told me more about what it’s like to coach each of them and their journeys to this point.
2025 6’3 G Jeremiah Ruffin
Ruffin picked up offers from Murray St, Old Dominion, and Clayton State last week.
CC: “Last year as a sophomore, he came in and I let him play just to figure it out and figure out the do’s and don’ts to being a great player and we went through some rough patches against some really tough competition. But I think all of those things and that process really helped him learn how to pick his spots. This year, he’s really bought into some of the things we’re teaching him about how to get to your spots, when to get to your jumper versus getting to the basket, and he’s just a very coachable kid.”
2025 6’5 F Travell Anderson
Anderson picked up an offer from Alabama State last week.
CC: “Travell’s made, in my opinion, the biggest jump as a player… He’s been real instrumental in being a big presence out there for us defensively. Knocking down that corner 3, that’s a real big improvement for him and we’re just looking for even greater improvement from him once he gets into the offseason strength and conditioning program.”
2023 6’1 G Talib Hamilton
Hamilton picked up an offer from Wilberforce last week.
CC: Talib has always been a high energy kid. When he did come over to Wilson Academy, he brought that same energy. He’s tenacious on defense and he’s a very strong leader on the court… He keeps us going a lot of times and his energy is infectious. I think wherever he ultimately decides to commit to, they’re going to get a tremendous player.”
I don’t expect the positive momentum to slow down for Wilson Academy anytime soon and Coach Cameron tells me that Isaiah Cameron, Ammarion Jones Ammarion Jones 6'0" | CG Wilson Academy | 2023 State GA , and Joseph Sonson Joseph Sonson 6'2" | CG Wilson Academy | 2024 State GA could all draw recruiting interest soon as well. With their talented collection of youth, the winning could very well continue for Wilson in coming years and they’re certainly a program to follow.
