Every night I have been blessed to watch fundamental point guard play that drives teams to victory but can get quite flashy at times with eye popping handle and jaw dropping range from the floor. These four young guards have really shown what ability and hard work can produce.
CAMDEN RAINFORD – PG – Randolph High School – Randolph, MA – Class of 2024
The definition of a point guard. What Camden brings to a team is leadership, toughness and high energy. As i begin to tell you about this player i want to start with his defense. I think this is an ability that can get overlooked now a days. This young man is one of the most tenacious defenders on and off the ball that I have ever seen. If you are an opposing point guard coming in to play the Randolph Blue Devils I would guess that you would get no sleep the night before. His quick feet and hands create a nightmare when trying to dribble, pass or shoot. As we move to the offensive side of the game it just gets better. A lightening fast first step has Camden getting by all defenders. If for some reason he isn’t finishing at the rim it is because he found an open teammate on a jaw dropping drive and dish. This young man is a proven winner with one state championship already under his belt. I wouldn’t be shocked if he added another one this year.
AIDEN SMITH – PG – Dartmouth High School – Dartmouth, MA – Class of 2025
As I walked into the gym to watch the Brockton Boxers play I was excited to see what talent the preseason Boston Globe #7 team had to offer. While it was impressive no one lit up the court that night that the opponents point guard. Aiden Smith, a sophomore at Dartmouth High, was absolutely electric. I can only describe him as an absolute problem for any team. This young man was a blur of step back three’s, in the lane spin moves and and one finishes that I was shocked. I was expecting a Brockton romp complete with dunks and threes, I was treated to a gritty come back win by the road team behind Smith’s 35 points. He has a full array of weapons on the offensive end and a solid defender. Aiden Smith is a must see player if you get the chance.
TREVOR JONES – PG – Duxbury High School – Duxbury, MA – Class of 2025
Trevor exudes way more poise as he runs his offense and guides his team than you would expect a sophomore should. Duxbury High School has been known to produce basketball royalty here in Massachusetts. With the son of Duxbury Legend and former Boston College and NBA Player Bill Curley on the team Jones stands out to be the leader. His confidence is second to none. I thought he was a senior guard while he dropped four three pointers in the first half against Silver Lake High School and lead the Dragons of Duxbury to 56 first half points. Don’t think he is only a shooter. When you have to respect a shot like Trevor’s you better have quick feet because he does and will go by you and get to the hoop in a blink of an eye. He can make tough shots and sees passing lanes and makes tough passes. In all, this is a point guard that Duxbury is lucky to have for 2 more years because he is only going to get better.
JAMAAL McCONNELL – PG – Canton High School – Canton, MA – Class of 2024
I have had the pleasure of watching Jamaal play twice this season. This is a point guard that can completely take over a game. During a winter tournament game in Milton, MA I watched Jamaal put the team on his back and take out a very talented Bishop Feehan team in overtime. He continually got by his defender and was able to finish at the hoop. He is a good decision maker with solid court vision and the ability to find his open teammates. He has excellent size and length for his position which allows him to create mismatches all the time. He is the type of player that is an engine, by that I mean he drives the offense.
