The Mission Viejo Diablos and the Aliso Niguel Wolverines squared off last night in a back-and-forth Sea View League matchup. Both teams can determine their own fate by winning out. The Wolverines got out to an early lead in this game and maintained that through halftime with a 26-20 lead. This was due to Jay Fromm and Ethan Harrington. Fromm is the hands you want the ball in when you need a bucket. His ability to create space and get himself a shot at any moment was incredible. Sometimes that is a skill that you can’t just teach. With Fromm covering the offensive duties, Harrington caused a world of pain on the defensive end. Forcing turnover after turnover and getting steals for easy layups on the other end. The most impressive attribute is his size and ability to use it as a point guard on both ends.
It ended up tied with all the great play at the end of the third quarter. The Diablos took that momentum and ran with it. Mostly due to their star guard, Jayden Hubbard. He led both teams in scoring with 19 and does it through various weapons. He’ll knock down a deep three in your face, get to the line and knock down free throws, or pick your pocket and throw it down on the other end. Nico Owens was really the star for me though. He chipped in 12 solid points, but more impressively he held Aliso Niguel’s star player to only four points. He is a defensive menace and uses his strong build and athleticism to stop anyone in his path. On switches, he is able to steal from a point guard, and when switched on a center he will still block his shot. Owens is one of the players that doesn’t show up as much on the box score, but any coach would be thrilled to have him on his team.
Due mostly to Hubbard and Owens, but all Diablos that touched the court made an impact in this big Sea View win. Mission Viejo went on a 14-2 run to start the fourth quarter and there was nothing that the Wolverines could do to claw back with a final score of 54-49. These are fun standings to pay attention to and some star players that will end up on the All-Sea View League teams at the end of the season.
