The event was held on Monday, Jan. 16 and featured a mix of both prep schools and local high school teams with a plenty of talent in the building. I was able to attend the event and here’s a look at some additional top standouts I saw.
1. Lucas Fenske – Moorpark 2023
Fenske was one of the standout players of the entire event. He can play multiple positions. He’s got the size to play in the post against smaller defenders and he can handle the ball and create shots in the halfcourt. He is a good shooter from three-point range with a quick release. If he is run off the three-point line, he’s comfortable putting the ball on the floor and getting to the basket. Able to draw contact at the rim and get to the free-throw line. Able to pass out of the post to open shooters using off-ball screens.
2. Marqui Worthy – Veritas 2023
A UMass commit, Worthy is a bit of a combo guard. He does well as a scoring guard creating his own shot but he did show off some ball-handling ability and functioned as the primary ball-handler at times in the halfcourt. He has solid vision and found the open teammate frequently by making the right pass. He’s patient with the ball in his hands, reads the defense and reacts accordingly. Can put the ball on the floor and attack the basket. Good on ball defender who used a proper stance to keep the ball-handler in front of him.
3. D.J. Dudley – LA Premier Prep 2023
Dudley is a scoring point guard who can attack the defense in multiple ways. He’s quick in transition and he can either stop and pop the pull-up jumper or he can accelerate and fly past defenders all the way to the basket. Used on-ball screens well and can attack the defense with a favorable matchup on a switch. Can pull-up and hit the little floater when getting into the lane. Does a good job attacking middle. Solid midrange shot.
4. Kamren Williams – AOSS Prep 2023
Williams is a player I’ve seen multiple times now and he’s always been a solid floor leader. What impresses me the most about him though is his defensive intensity. He has quick hands and does a good job playing the passing lanes; able to poke balls free and force turnovers. He’s very unselfish too; in the halfcourt he’s always looking to make the extra pass. He does recognize though when he has scoring opportunities. He’s a strong guard who uses his size efficiently to muscle his way to the basket. Can knock down threes off the catch.
