Continue ReadingThis Martin Luther King Jr. day some of the best teams in the NYC PSAL came out to show off their amazing talents. After 6 games and about 8 hours of basketball here are the 5 forwards who had the most impressive performances.
Prince Odimegwu (Senior, Forward, 6’4, Broome Street Academy)- Odimegwu plays a controlled game finding ways to contribute to his teams at all levels of the game. Odimegwu had excellent hops, a quick first step and a high motor that kept him going the entire game (and into double OT). As the game went on, Odimegwu settled into the offense and showed off his impressive shooting stroke in the 4th quarter, helping his team to make a big comeback.
Monroe Harrison (Junior, Forward, 6’7, Broome Street Academy)- Harrison’s most impressive attribute is his athleticism. After he missed a tough shot at the rim, the other team got the rebound and was running out in transition for what seemed like an easy layup until Harrison came out of nowhere and made a huge chase down block. Harrison has a good feel for the defensive end of the game, knowing where he is needed in rotations and how to position himself for defensive rebounds.
Babekir Elshiekh (Senior, Forward, William E Grady)- Elshiekh looks like a man amongst boys out there. Elshiekh uses his strength and size to bully his way into the paint and hit shots against defenders. Elshiekh plays the game with a high level of poise never looking rattled by what’s happening around him. On the defensive end Elshiekh has solid fundamentals and is rarely, if ever, caught being beat by his man.
Kante Aly (Junior, Forward, Queens High School of Teaching)- Aly plays the game with a high level of energy and is always looking to get involved in actions. Aly is super long allowing him to grab rebounds that he has no business getting. He has a decent outside shot and a reliable form to match.
Kerry Mabou (Senior, Forward, 6’6, Washington Heights Expeditionary Learning School)- Mabou is a pogo stick out there, using his excellent combination of length and jumping ability to contest shots and grab rebounds. After racking up a series of blocks, the opposing team began to fear Mabou in the paint. It was clear that Mabou knew his role on the team and he didn’t attempt to be the hero who took the ball coast to coast. If Mabou can fill out his frame a bit more, he would be a real asset to teams at the next level.
