The Mountainside Tournament (Oregon City over West Salem, Camas over Mountainside) and the Forest Grove Tournament (North Salem over Aloha, Forest Grove over Lakeridge).
From all that action, here’s a look a the top performers from the senior Class of 2023 this past week:
Moroni Seely-Roberts Moroni Seely-Roberts 6'6" | SF Lincoln | 2023 State OR (2023 Lincoln)
Big start to the season for Seely-Roberts, with 26 points and 12 rebounds against Mountainside and then a 19-point, 13-rebound double-double against Beaverton – both wins. The 6-foot-6 senior was near unstoppable getting to the rim but was also able to show off his expanded range, specifically hitting open threes at the top of the key. Seely-Roberts was also extremely outstanding on the defensive boards and was sharp with his passing, quickly finding open teammates at the hoop for baskets after receiving the ball himself.
Malachi Seely-Roberts Malachi Seely-Roberts 6'8" | SF Lincoln | 2023 State OR (2023 Lincoln)
26-point outburst for Seely-Roberts against Mountainside, with 22 of those points coming in the second as he caught fire from beyond the three-point arc, hitting four treys. Not as many points scored against Beaverton but in both games, the 6-foot-8 senior was solid at the point running the offense and getting the ball to open teammates.
Sean Chris Tresvant Sean Chris Tresvant 5'11" | PG Cleveland | 2023 State OR (2023 Cleveland)
Long in the role of defensive specialist, Tresvant has taken on the role of scorer for Cleveland this season, utilizing his speed and quickness to his advantage. The 6-foot senior pushed the pace against Sherwood, getting into the lane and to the hoop for the harm for himself or for teammates to the tune of 15 points and 5 assists. His increased scoring capacity hasn’t taken away from his defense as he continues to be a tremendous on-the-ball defender.
Jamel Pichon Jamel Pichon 5'11" | SF Cleveland | 2023 State OR (2023 Cleveland)
Pichon is a tough, power guard that has really stepped up his role with the Warriors into the starting lineup and also one their top scorers so far. His bread and butter is getting to the hoop but against Sherwood he showed that you can’t totally play off of him as he sank a couple of jumpers. He also did a good job hitting free throws down the stretch as the Bowmen started coming back. 14 points and 3 assists on the night.
Matthew Verkamp Matthew Verkamp 6'4" | SF Sherwood | 2023 State OR (2023 Sherwood)
While his shot was a little spotty against Cleveland – as it was for all the Bowmen – one thing Verkamp did well all night on Wednesday was rebound the basketball. The 6-foot-4 swingman fought hard against the Warriors big guys on the boards and at the end of the day, would up with 14 rebounds. Offensively he finished with 11 points but also did a good job passing the basketball, winding up with 3 assists.
Breyan Kelly Breyan Kelly 6'2" | CG Sherwood | 2023 State OR (2023 Sherwood)
Very slow start for Kelly in the first half against Cleveland, but stuck with it and the scoring came along for him in the second half. What we like about Kelly is he doesn’t just rely on his jumper as he’s also willing to take it inside and strongly attempt shots right at the defense in the lane, often times drawing contact. 18 points and his only three of the night was near the end of the game.
Jaylin Ormond Jaylin Ormond 6'5" | SF Mountainside | 2023 State OR (2023 Mountainside)
Ormond does what many big men don’t do anymore – know his role and stick to what he does best, which is stay in the lane and do his damage there. The 6-foot-5 senior held his own against the tall frontline Lincoln and then was strong again with his finishes – especially in the first half – against Camas. He tallied 13 points and 7 rebounds against Lincoln and added 15 more against Camas.
Colby Ackerman Colby Ackerman 6'0" | CG Westside Christian | 2023 State OR (2023 Westside Christian)
Came off the bench against Dayton but showed up big time as his scoring punch helped Westside Christian come back for a win. The combo guard was solid with his shot and made plays off the dribble to create for his teammates. He ended up the team’s leading scorer with 14 points.
