Week 2 Rankings Update
Week 2 was incredibly eventful around the state, and it resulted in major shakeup in the rankings across all four classes. Below we detail some of the key movement in each class.
In Class 1A, North Linn (5-0) holds onto the top spot, followed by St. Mary’s, Remsen (2-0) and Grand View Christian (4-0). The big mover in the class is Bellevue (6-0), who moves from #10 all the way up to #4 following a fantastic week that included wins over borderline 2A Top 10 Camanche, a solid Galena (IL) team, and then-2A #1 Monticello. The Comets were a surprising state tournament qualifier last season, and they’ve followed that run up with a tremendous start to the season, proving that they’re for real. Lynnville-Sully (6-0) is the lone newcomer to the rankings, checking in at #10 following a win over North Mahaska.
Following the aforementioned loss by Monticello (3-1), the Panthers fall from #1 to #4 in the Class 2A rankings. Isaiah Naylor Isaiah Naylor 6'0" | SG Roland-Story | 2023 State IA (24.5 points a game, cover photo) has led Roland-Story (4-0) to the top spot, followed by Central Lyon (4-0), and Aplington-Parkersburg (4-0). Teams 6-10 from last week remained the same. Class 2A is generally among the most consistent classes to rank, and that has remained true so far this season.
On the other end of the spectrum from 2A is Class 3A, which continues to be topsy-turvy. Xavier (4-0) and Bondurant-Farrar (4-0) hold steady in the top two spots, but then there is a ton of shakeup. Heelan (3-1) jumps from #10 to #3 following a strong win over Western Christian. North Polk (4-0) enters the rankings at #4 following a strong start to the season that includes four wins over teams with a combined .537 winning percentage. Clear Lake (3-0), MOC-Floyd Valley (4-1), and Denison-Schleswig (3-1) also enter the rankings at #6, 7, and 10, respectively.
The top three teams in Class 4A seem to have really separated from the rest of the pack, with Waukee Northwest (4-0) staying strong at #1 following their win over #2 Waukee (4-1). The Warriors didn’t get penalized for a narrow road loss against the #1 team in the state, holding strong at #2. Kennedy (3-0) has blasted teams early on this season, winning their first three games by an average of 50.3 points a game; the Cougars remain at #3. Iowa City West (4-0), Senior (3-0), and Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln (3-0) enter the rankings at 8-10, respectively.
