Jaxien Frost (2023), Mount Ayr – Picked as the Pride of Iowa Conference player of the year, Frost started off his senior campaign strongly, with 38 points and 14 rebounds. Playing guard at 6 foot 3 makes it easy for Frost to score from anywhere on the court. In Mount Ayr’s first contest of the year, he showed off his scoring ability and efficiency by 66.7% percent from the field, and 40% from three. Frost also brought down 14 rebounds, gathered 3 steals, and dished out 4 assists in a 76-71 win against Clarke. After averaging 22 points a game last season, expect Frost to dominate games like this all season.
Taylor Reed (2023), Fremont-Mills – In Fremont-Mills’ opener, Reed poured in 33 points along with 18 rebounds. He showed off his ability to finish down low, shooting just over 50% from the field. At 6 foot 2, Reed uses his frame and physicalness to hit the boards hard. He brought in 18 rebounds on Monday night, with 10 of them being offensive. Reed has quick hands and is smart on the defensive end, which led him to 5 steals. Reed’s performance helped lead the Knights to a two-point victory against Heartland Christian.
Thursday Night (12/1) Games
Brody Nardini (2023), Woodward-Granger – Woodward-Granger hadn’t beaten Martensdale-St Mary’s since 2019, but a 31-point outing from Nardini helped the Hawks get the win. He has a smooth shot from three, going 5 of 6 last Thursday night. Nardini is a smart player on both sides of the ball. Offensively, not forcing shots and getting teammates involved. He is active on the defensive end, generating steals, and is in the mix on the boards.
Douglas Taylor Douglas Taylor 6'5" | SF Newman Catholic | 2023 State IA (2023), Newman Catholic – Committed to play baseball at Iowa, Taylor can ball on the hardwood too. In a 76-58 over Bishop Garrigan, Taylor filled the stat sheet with 27 points, 16 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals. After averaging 22 points a game last season, Taylor comes back as one of 1A’s top scorers. At 6 foot 5, he uses his length and athleticism to score at the hoop and be effective on the glass. Look for more of the same from Taylor this season.
Friday Night (12/2) Games
Cal Heydon (2026), Coon Rapids-Bayard – In his first varsity start, Heydon posted a very impressive stat line. He led the Crusaders with 22 points, 16 rebounds, 6 assists, and 2 blocks. Just a freshman, Heydon showed good touch around the hoop, shooting 11 of 16 from the field. He also showed a good ability to find open teammates and a knack for knowing the bounce off the rim to grab rebounds. At 6’4″, Heydon is definitely a name to keep an eye on.
Caleb Hubbard (2023), Diagonal – Hubbard started off his senior season with an impressive triple-double. He had 20 points on 10 of 14 shooting, 13 rebounds, and 10 steals. Battling down low on the boards, Hubbard is really good at tracking the ball and bringing down rebounds. Ten steals on the defensive side should speak for itself, but Hubbards is really good at getting his hand on the ball and forcing turnovers.
Saturday Night (12/3) Games
Brett Kane (2023), Springville – The 6’0″ senior forward for the Orioles is off to a good start this season. Despite a 76-66 loss to Central Elkader, he poured in 31 points on 10 of 19 shooting, and 7 of 13 shooting from three-point range. Kane has a smooth shot from beyond the arch, shooting 46.7% through the first two games. Along with his game high 31 points, he added 6 rebounds, 4 steals, and 2 assists.
