Continue ReadingThe Holiday Classic at Torrey Pines kicked off with its showcase tipoff slate of games including some high-level matchups like Carlsbad vs Mission Bay, Santa Fe Christian vs Torrey Pines, and the headliner of La Costa Canyon vs San Ysidro. I saw some great performances in a great atmosphere as these players got ready to take on their respective brackets in what looks to be another great Holiday Classic
Gavin Girouard (2024) | 6-0 G | Mission Bay
Girouard had a 33-point explosion for the Buccaneers in the opening game. He brought hot three-point shooting all game long off the catch and in transition to spark some big runs for his Mission Bay squad and added in some timely floaters as well as crafty finishes around the rim to keep leading the scoring charge. Girouard and the Buccaneers avenge a loss earlier in the season to the Lancers and look the part of a team that belongs in the open division conversation as they enter the most active part of the season
Jake Hall Jake Hall 6'2" | SG Carlsbad | 2025 State #336 Nation CA-S (2025) | 6-3 G | Carlsbad
Hall at the Holiday Classic Tip-Off last season had a big performance and helped make a name for himself and this year as a household name in the county, it was no different. Hall showed off some great body control with some tough finishes through contact and hit a handful of threes for the Lancers to lead them in scoring. Hall has such a feel for scoring the ball despite only being an underclassman and is consistently one of the best scorers in San Diego. Carlsbad and Hall look to get ready to bounce back as they open up Senator’s Divison play when they return on the 27th
Brycen Mackenzie (2024) | 6-1 G | Santa Fe Christian
Mackenzie dropped 25 points in the Eagles’ biggest win of the season so far as they upset the hosting Falcons of Torrey Pines. He came out firing scoring 7 points within the first minute and a half of the game and setting the tone for Santa Fe Christian the rest of the way. Mackenzie showed why he is one of the best three-level scorers in his class as he made it look easy creating offense for himself off the dribble whether it be pull-up jumpers or showing off his touch around the rim. In the big-time moments of the game, Mackenzie was there for the Eagles to hit the big-time shots. Santa Fe Christian and Mackenzie go into Governor’s Divison play on the 27th feeling the momentum after tonight’s success.
Alex Cabuilo (2023) | 6-3 G/F | Torrey Pines |
Cabuilo did a little bit of everything for the Falcons tonight and showed off his versatility as a player. Cabuilo can bring the ball up the floor as well as play in the post and does a good job of filling up the stat sheet. Cabuilo was finding open teammates through the offense and attacking the boards every play creating second-chance opportunities for himself that he cashed in on. Where Cabuilo really shone though was on the hustle plays as he was able to draw three offensive fouls and get a big steal that he would turn into a big and-one late in the contest. Cabulio and Torrey Pines prepare to try to set the ship right as they start their Nation Division bracket play on the 27th
Ty Hendler Ty Hendler 6'3" | CG La Costa Canyon | 2023 State CA-S (2023) | 6-3 PG | La Costa Canyon |
Hendler has been a four-year varsity player for the Mavericks and looked the part of a veteran for La Costa Canyon tonight with a 27-point performance against a talented San Ysidro team. Hendler was making plays for LCC all night long both as a scorer and as a playmaker. The Colorado College commit controlled the pace of the game for the Mavericks and shot the lights out of the ball from deep and showed off some acrobatic finishes around the basket. Hendler also made the right plays for his teammates setting them up with great looks through his passing by driving and kicking and not forcing anything. Hendler and the Mavericks look to build off their close loss and come back with a vengeance on the 27th as American Division bracket play kicks off
Mikey Williams Mikey Williams 6'3" | CG San Ysidro | 2023 State #12 Nation CA-S (2023) | 6-2 G | San Ysidro |
Williams continued his stellar senior year with a 35-point performance tonight coming off a huge win over #22 nationally ranked Notre Dame prior to this. The Memphis commit had his elite athleticism on display as he blew past defenders and finished relentlessly at the rim. His shot-creating ability is second to none and with his shooting range, he becomes a threat to shoot the ball the moment he passes that half-court line. The confidence and poise Williams displays on the court is what he needs to succeed at the next level and that fire he plays with is what has made him one of the best 2023s in the nation.
