Here’s a look at part one of some of the top floor generals in the state to go check out this year.
John St. Germain John St. Germain 6'2" | PG St. Anne's Belfield | 2023 State VA | 6’1” PG | St. Anne’s-Belfield 2023
St. Germain has been out for a few weeks with an injury, and STAB has had some very close losses that you would think they could probably pull off if they had their senior floor general on the floor. St. Germain has unbelievable natural feel and instincts with the ball in his hands, but it’s his skillset as a passer that separates him as he can throw the pitch back off the ball screen with both hands, can throw the skip with both hands and he can thread the needle on the pocket pass too. Throw in the fact that he’s a strong finisher and draws contact around the rim and it makes him one of the best at running the pick-and-roll that you will find.
AJ Wills AJ Wills 6'1" | PG S3 Academy | 2023 State VA | 6’2” PG | Shining Stars Sports Academy 2023
Wills is still one of the best available and most under recruited players in the state, as he has the innate ability to take over the game and make plays for himself and others off the bounce. He’s a big time athlete with great burst and change of speed to get in the lane, he’s an athletic finisher with great body control and he has great feel and knows how to make plays on both ends of the floor. He’s a naturally talented player who could step in tomorrow at a school and make an impact.
Etienne Strothers Etienne Strothers 6'1" | PG Menchville | 2023 State VA | 6’3” PG | Menchville 2023
The Appalachian State commit has steadily improved throughout his high school career and is off to a huge start for a Menchville team that already has some big wins and looks like they could be the favorite in Class 5. Strothers has learned how to make the game much easier and plays under control, he has a scoring skillset that allows him to fill it up in different ways but he also knows where his teammates are at and can deliver tough passes to them when he gets in the lane. He’s one of the more well-rounded guards you’ll come across in this class and the way he’s developed he should be a very good player at the next level.
Jordan Horne Jordan Horne 6'1" | PG Miller School | 2023 VA | 6’2” PG | Miller School 2023
Horne is leading the favorite in the VISAA D2 this year and the way he’s learned how to be a floor general over the past year or so is very impressive. He’s a big and physical guard who can set the tone in their press and leads by example on the defensive end, in transition he’s a terrific playmaker who is unselfish and delivers passes to shooters on the money and he can get downhill and finish himself. He’s continually improved and the way that he has worked to be the primary ball handler and playmaker means the rest of his game should improve too with time.
Cameron Cole Cameron Cole 6'4" | PG Highland | 2023 State VA | 6’2” PG | Highland School 2023
The Navy commit is leading a young but talented Highland School team this year, and his play is a big reason they have gotten off to such a great start and look like a dark horse candidate in the VISAA D2 classification. He’s an alpha leader whose teammates will follow his every move, he can use his size to get to spots to score it or see over defenders to deliver passes and he will sit down and guard the ball and is a good help side defender too. While he’ll have to score the ball more this year than in the past, he still will make his team better across the board.
Samuel Brannen Samuel Brannen 6'0" | CG King’s Fork | 2023 State VA | 6’0” PG | King’s Fork 2023
Brannen is leading the Class 4 favorites in the Bulldogs who have gotten off to a terrific start this season and a lot of it has to do with him. While he isn’t a traditional pass first type of floor general, he’s their undisputed best scorer, ball handler and playmaker and with his all-around skillset he’s able to impact the game in a number of different ways. He’s excellent in pick-and-rolls where he’s patient and can come off both as a scoring threat and a playmaker, he’s an excellent shooter from deep and can finish in the lane and he sees the floor well and can deliver passes on point to his shooters and bigs.
