In my first assignment for Prep Hoops Dakotas, I made the short drive to Aberdeen Central to catch a South Dakota AA Matchup, with Aberdeen Central and Rapid City Central squaring off in their season openers.
Rapid City Central pulled it off in the end in a game of runs, where they made the final run to close out the game 57-52. The matchup also has some prospects to mention that stood out.
Aberdeen Central
Spencer Barr Spencer Barr 5'11" | PG Aberdeen Central | 2023 State SD , the University of Jamestown commit, didn’t have his best shooting display but showed to be the most impactful prospect on both ends. Plays with great intensity on the defensive side of the ball and 100% brings it on the court. Will play heavy on-ball ball pressure and made steals that turned into transition action. Easily the quickest athlete in this game. Had an impressive full speed pull-up jumper that was a crucial shot to set Aberdeen up to potentially pull off the win.
6’2 G 2023 Carter Dingman had a nice game, scoring 13 for Aberdeen. Showed a complete skill set and ability to score on his own and take things into his own hands at times. Also, made some nice dime-off passes to teammates for crucial buckets under the hoop. Can shoot the three and get to the cup. I was impressed with his overall game on the offensive side of the ball. A smooth athlete and mover, that will be counted on as a secondary and X-factor scorer, behind Barr.
Jett Carlson 6’3 G/Wing 2024 has a long and lanky frame that can be built upon. With this only being his first game in his Junior season, Jett looks to have potential with his frame and athleticism profile. One to watch, if he can fill out his slender frame some.
Parker Lemer 6’2 G 2024 is another key piece for Aberdeen that pitched in a solid 8 points. A solid athlete with some length and athletic frame. Not an elite prospect but can get it done from mid-range and get to the hoop.
Not prototypical size in the interior at 6’2, but 2024 C Grant Fritz was productive, scoring 9 points and showing a high motor. Scored some in the paint and brought good energy and physicality.
6’2 C 2023 Brian Johnson deserves a mention for coming off the bench and bringing great energy and had a sequence where he scored consecutive buckets in the paint.
6’1 G 2024 Oliver Rife stood out with his longer frame for a 6’1 prospect. Someone to keep an eye on, as he’s a good mover and athlete.
Rapid City Central
6’1 PG 2024 Jet Janvrin Jet Janvrin 6'0" | PG Rapid City Central | 2024 State SD was impressive, scoring 16 points and led the game in the scoring department. He’s a smooth, disributing point guard, that can also score the rock and be a threat. A tight handle on the ball and can bring it up with composure and ball security. He’s one to watch in terms of true point guards that can also get buckets. A top 75 prospect in the 2024 class in South Dakota.
6’0 G 2023 Cameron Steidley scored 8 points and hit this big three late in the 4th quarter. See below
Cameron has a skilled offensive game and has some “shake” and finesse to his game, with the ability to knock down trey balls.
6’5 Wing/PF Cooper Totten Cooper Totten 6'6" | SF Rapid City Central | 2023 State SD had the most impressive length and frame combination between the two teams. Could play on a wing and in the paint, offensively. Had athletic ability to defend multiple positions and could bang inside and rebound.
6’4 C 2024 Shun-Zi White Woman may have been the deciding factor in this game for Rapid City to pull off the victory. Had a longer and big frame at 6’4, which allowed him to battle and show his strength against a smaller lineup in Aberdeen. Made some big-time baskets and was second in the team in scoring with 11 points.
6’0 G 2023 Jon Suarez was a smooth and skilled prospect with the ball. He was a good penetrator of the ball and created for teammates. Also, put in 6 points for himself.
