In this overview of the December rankings update, we will look at some of the newcomers to the rankings, new signings and commitments, and look at the players who have had upward movement in this release.
Signings & Commitments
The early signing period came in November and unlike recent years, there was not much news on signings and commitments when it came to seniors of this class. The state’s number one player, Chris Lockett Chris Lockett 6'5" | CG Isidore Newman | 2023 State #180 Nation LA , signed his National letter of intent (NLI) to play for the Boise State Broncos. The only other signing during this time was from Dorian Booker Dorian Booker 6'10" | PF Scotlandville | 2023 State LA of Scotlandville. He signed with the Privateers of UNO. On commitments, Brandon Hardy Brandon Hardy 6'4" | SG Zachary | 2023 State #234 Nation LA , of defending 5A champion Zachary, committed to UL-Lafayette. While this has been a quiet period, three of the top 10 players in the state have made their decision in reference to the next level.
New Additions
There were twelve additions to the rankings during this period. The most notable players were point guard Mason Guillory Mason Guillory 6'3" | PG St. Thomas More | 2023 State LA from St. Thomas More and Ja’Corey Thomas Ja’Corey Thomas 6'4" | SF Walker | 2023 State LA of Walker. Both players entered as top 40 players in the state. Other additions were sharpshooters Lachlan Thompson Lachlan Thompson 6'2" | SG Choudrant | 2023 State LA of Choudrant and A.J. Allen A.J. Allen 6'4" | SG Claiborne Christian | 2023 State LA of Claiborne Christian. Both players are highly accurate from three. The back court of Cedric Stanford Cedric Stanford 6'3" | CG Bolton | 2023 State LA and Jaylen Welch Jaylen Welch 6'1" | CG Bolton | 2023 State LA of Bolton rounded out the new additions to the rankings. Rise in the rankings
Along with the two newcomers, there were a handful of players who saw their rankings rise due to their early play. Anthony Johnson Anthony Johnson 6'0" | PG L.B. Landry | 2023 State LA is showing Louisiana that he is a top point guard in the state and is firmly in the top 35. Tahj Roots Tahj Roots 5'11" | PG Bossier | 2023 State LA has had a good start to the season and he saw upward movement as well. Wings Draven Smith Draven Smith 6'5" | SF French Settlement | 2023 State LA and Fred’Travious Benjamin Fred’Travious Benjamin 6'2" | SG Green Oaks | 2023 State LA are showing that they can score, handle and rebound during their contests. Each player has gotten off to a hot start and both players are playing themselves into All-state recognition.
