As the first couple of weeks of the season roll by, some new names are jumping out. Time to get to know some new players in the Northeast Kansas region. Check out these new names:
The Junior Blues have a lot of big bodies that are able to play in the paint or on the wing. One thing they needed was someone to handle the ball and provide the ability to make plays off the bounce or from behind the arc. The sophomore Ballard has provided a balancing element to senior Back Bachelor. He is fearless and makes plays on the drive despite not being a big guy. He’s not intimidated and plays smart.
Just when you thought Free State had graduated too many playmakers to compete at a high level, enter Zeek Brown. He’s a long, bouncy sophomore who was not the least bit fazed by the jump to varsity ball. He’s been torching opponents from deep and off the bounce. He earned MOP of the Hays Shootout in his first varsity action.
This transfer from Texas brought a spark to the Spartans’ football team this fall, and he’s given the basketball team another weapon. He takes some of the attention away from returnersand River Peters by speeding up the pace and creating a lot of havoc when he has the ball. His 11 points per game have really changed the dynamic in Emporia.
This guy is scorching the nets out of the gate. Through four games, he was hitting 60 percent from deep. He’s also got a nice handle and attacks the paint, getting off a nice jumper in the midrange.
Torrez played sparingly as a sophomore. Now he’s putting that experience to good use as a junior, averaging 10 points per game for a balanced Bulldog team that is off to a hot start. He’s a real threat from deep, stretching opposing defenses.
