The Hawks looked for a backdoor lob to sophomore forward Drew Timmons Drew Timmons 6'6" | SF Archbishop Hannan | 2025 State #52 Nation LA , but Hornets senior Czavian “Zae” Teasett cut off the angle.
So older brother Luke Timmons, the senior guard, flashed to the top of the key, dribbled once to his left, gathered through contact and laid up the buzzer-beater in the lane for the 49-48 win in the matchup of defending state champions.
“Not even just the way they finished, but just the way they competed throughout,” coach Errol Gauff said. “We have a lot of kids who don’t have a lot of varsity experience out there playing. So all these games are a great opportunity to find out who we are. And you’re playing not only one of the best teams, but going up against one of the best coaches in their gym. What a glorious opportunity we’ve been blessed with.
“Are we proud to have won the game? Heck yeah. But I was proud to see the effort and the resiliency of our young men. I thought they just kept playing — good or bad calls, good or bad plays. We had some bad plays there, partly because of the things Scotlandville can do to exploit things. So I was just proud of the way the young men kept playing.”
Luke Timmons (6’0″ | 2023)
The senior guard’s primary impacts for the first three quarters came as a ball-handler, distributor and defender before scoring four of his six points in the final period, including the game winner. Luke Timmons is a hard-nosed, veteran leader a team still growing up around him and his brother and came up with one of the team’s biggest plays of the season on the road.

The returning all-state first-teamer was one of the most versatile players on the court. He battled Teasett, the Scotlandville quarterback, in a physical matchup in the paint on both ends of the floor, but was also a strong ball-handler and facilitator in transition and on the perimeter in the half-court offense.
“Ball-handling-wise, I can just get a rebound and go this year,” he said. “Last year, I would have to wait to get it to someone else and let them do all the dribbling, so that’s kind of relieved my teammates from having to deal with full-court pressure the whole game.”
The younger Timmons finished with 16, was the Hawks’ leading rebounding presence and interior defensive presence with a blocked shot.
AJ. Thompson (2025)
The wiry sophomore wing was a major difference-maker, including 10 third-quarter points to ultimately lead the team with 17 points. His coach and teammates called the performance encouraging, particularly considering the competition, for a title-hopeful team working to develop less experienced contributors into bigger roles.
Thompson showed confidence driving through traffic for baskets in the lane throughout the night and hit three 3-pointers. On his team’s first four possessions of the second half alone, he scored on a backdoor cut to the goal, then a pair of 3’s.
“A.J. is a kid who’s just got to continue to grow in belief of himself,” Gauff. “We do. We just need him to be more aggressive. I was glad for him. He works very hard, and tonight he trusted that work and played and made some huge shots and plays for us.”

The senior provided the Hornets their own impressively versatile inside-outside presence on both ends of the court. The physical, multisport standout battled Drew Timmons Drew Timmons 6'6" | SF Archbishop Hannan | 2025 State #52 Nation LA in the paint and on the boards throughout the contest and was one of the top ball-handlers, facilitators and perimeter scorers on offense.
Teasett scored a game-high 22 points, including four shots near the goal and four 3-pointers.
Jamal Drewery Jamal Drewery 5'10" | PG Scotlandville | 2025 State LA (5’10” | 2025)
Scotlandville has a long, consistent tradition of leaders at point guard under coach Carlos Sample that includes a pair of recent Gatorade Player of the Year winners in LSU signee Javonte Smart and Virginia signee Reece Beekman. And Drewery is the next in line following the graduation of Northwestern State signee Emareyon McDonald.
The sophomore showed good poise, vision and passing to get his teammates involved, particularly as some of his shots didn’t quite hit their mark early. Drewery eventually scored 15, including three 3-pointers — the last of which put the Hornets ahead, 48-47 in the final minute.
