Continue ReadingThe Indiana High School Basketball season tipped off just days before Thanksgiving and we’ve now almost made it to Christmas. The first month of games are officially in the books and we are gearing up for holiday tournaments across the state next week. With a few days coming up of no games, this is a good time to step back and look at what we have learned so far this season. The first experience we want to dive into here at Prep Hoops Indiana is taking a look at the Indiana All-Star team. One of the most prestigious honors bestowed on the top players in Indiana every year, the All-Star team is made up of the 13 best seniors in the state. Let’s take a look at the top candidates as we head into Christmas break.
Locks
Xavier Booker Xavier Booker 6'11" | PF Cathedral | 2023 State #4 Nation IN (Cathedral H.S.) – The 6’11” 5-star forward has struggled in Cathedral’s two big showcase games so far this season, but he still is a lock for the Indiana All-Star team. Booker is averaging 14 points, 9.7 rebounds, and 2.7 blocks per game for the 5-1 Irish that are ranked #2 in Class 4A by Prep Hoops Indiana. The Michigan State signee is back in action at Warren Central on Tuesday, December 27th.
Markus Burton Markus Burton 5'11" | PG Penn | 2023 State #190 Nation IN (Penn H.S.) – Burton is likely the front-runner for the Indiana Mr. Basketball award at this point in the season. The Notre Dame signee has led Penn to a 6-0 record and Class 4A #3 ranking. He is averaging an incredible 27.7 points, 6.3 rebounds, 4.7 assists, and 5.0 steals per game. You can catch the Kingsmen in action against Ben Davis in the Hall of Fame Class at New Castle High School on Friday, December 30th.
Myles Colvin Myles Colvin 6'5" | SG Heritage Christian | 2023 State #51 Nation IN (Heritage Christian) – Colvin and the Eagles are just 2-5 on the season, but the individual statistics are obviously that of an Indiana All-Star team member. The future Purdue Boilermaker is averaging in the neighborhood of 22 points per game (complete stats are unavailable online). Heritage Christian hosts Triton Central on Thursday, December 29th.
Zane Doughty Zane Doughty 6'8" | C Ben Davis | 2023 State IN (Ben Davis H.S.) – The anchor of Ben Davis’ 10-0 start and rise to #1 in the state. Doughty is the heart and sole of the Giants team with the toughness and energy that he brings to the floor every night. He sat out the last game for injury precautions, but is expected to suit back up when they take on Penn in the Hall of Fame Classic at New Castle on Friday, December 30th. Doughty, a 6’9″ Valparaiso signee, is averaging 13.6 points, 10.3 rebounds, and 3.0 blocks per game.
Joey Hart Joey Hart 6'5" | SG Linton-Stockton | 2023 State #214 Nation IN (Linton-Stockton H.S.) – This Central Florida commit is putting up some big time numbers this season for one of the best teams in Class 2A. The Miners are 6-1 heading into the Wabash Valley Classic which begins on Monday the 26th. Hart is averaging 23.1 points per game.
Logan Imes Logan Imes 6'4" | PG Zionsville | 2023 State #202 Nation IN (Zionsville H.S.) – After a tough start to the season against one of the best schedules in the state, Zionsville seems to have hit their stride. The Eagles have won three straight, including a win at Kokomo, to improve to 6-3 on the season. Imes, a Penn State commit, is a big reason for that. The 6’4″ point guard is averaging 15.2 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game.
Sam Orme Sam Orme 6'9" | SF Carmel | 2023 State #196 Nation IN (Carmel H.S.) – A 6’8″ Belmont signee, Orme is having a fantastic senior season to help lead Carmel to an early 6-3 record. His ability to shoot the basketball at his size makes him an incredibly tough matchup. He continues to showcase ever-improving ability off of the dribble as well.
JaQualon Roberts JaQualon Roberts 6'8" | PF Bloomington North | 2023 State IN (Bloomington H.S. North) – Roberts is putting 22.6 points and 9.6 rebounds per game for the 4-3 Cougars. The Vanderbilt commit is a dynamic 6’7″ playmaker who can guard multiple positions defensively as well. Bloomington North will take on Zionsville at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Friday, December 30th at 4:30.
Likely Selections
Mason Jones Mason Jones 6'7" | PF Valparaiso | 2023 State IN (Valparaiso H.S.) – Jones is putting up numbers that make it hard to keep him off of the team. The 6’7″ Ball State signee is averaging 23.9 points and 9.3 rebounds per game for the Vikings who are 4-3 on the season. They will be playing in the Homestead Tournament beginning on Wednesday, December 28th against Bishop Dwenger.
Sheridan Sharp Sheridan Sharp 6'2" | PG Ben Davis | 2023 State IN (Ben Davis H.S.) – This Ben Davis team is going to deserve multiple selections and after Doughty, the next man up would absolutely be their point guard. Sharp’s greatness doesn’t always translate to the stat sheet every night, but he is the two-way threat that sets the tone for everything the Giants due. The unsigned senior is averaging 11.0 points, 6.6 assists, and 3.6 steals per game.
Jaron Tibbs Jaron Tibbs 6'4" | SF Cathedral | 2023 State IN (Cathedral H.S.) – It is probably unfair, but Tibbs would likely be a “lock” if he was a basketball recruit instead of a football recruit. However, since he is headed to play football for Purdue he sometimes get overlooked in basketball discussions. Tibbs is averaging a team-leading 19.8 points per game to go with 5.0 rebounds and 3.8 assists for the #2 ranked Irish. He absolutely deserves to be selected to the team, even if he doesn’t participate due to football obligations.
Other Candidates
Luke Almodovar Luke Almodovar 6'2" | SG Noblesville | 2023 State IN (Noblesville H.S.) – If Noblesville can make their way out of Sectional 8, it will likely be because of the continued strong play of Almodovar. If that does happen then it will put him in real striking distance of the Indiana All-Star team. Averaging 16.6 points per game.
Joey Brown Joey Brown 6'6" | SG North Central | 2023 State #280 Nation IN (North Central H.S.) – Named to the Junior All-Star team last season, Brown is once again leading the way for North Central. Averaging in the neighborhood (complete stats not available online) of 14 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists per game.
Ahmere Carson Ahmere Carson 6'2" | PG Anderson | 2023 State IN (Anderson H.S.) – Averaging over 20 points per game with the offensive ability to go for 40 on any given night. He is capable of putting up numbers where it would be hard to leave him off the team.
Jermaine Coleman Jermaine Coleman 6'7" | SF Park Tudor | 2023 State IN (Park Tudor) – Averaging 20.2 points and 5.6 rebounds for 4-2 Park Tudor. Was named an Indiana Junior All-Star.
Anthony Dancler Anthony Dancler 6'2" | SG Southport | 2023 State IN (Southport H.S.) – Dancler is healthy and putting together the type of season we all would expect from him. He is an excellent scorer from all three levels with the ability to get hot from beyond the arc.
Jake Davis Jake Davis 6'6" | SF Cathedral | 2023 State IN (Cathedral H.S.) – 6’6″ Mercer signee is one of the best pure shooters in the state. Averaging 12.7 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 3.3 assists for the Irish while shooting 15-34 from beyond the arc.
Cooper Farrall Cooper Farrall 6'5" | SF Culver Academy | 2023 State IN (Culver Academy) – A Junior All-Star selection last season, this 6’6″ Bentley signee is averaging over 20 points per game and just shy of 10 rebounds. Culver Academy is 5-3 with a long layoff until January 13th.
Jalen Hooks Jalen Hooks 6'6" | SF Warren Central | 2023 State #282 Nation IN (Warren Central H.S.) – Hooks is fighting an uphill battle having just returned to the state of Indiana for his senior season, but his play on the floor for Warren Central is certainly getting him in the conversation.
Jaylen Mullen Jaylen Mullen 6'0" | PG North Daviess | 2023 State IN (North Daviess H.S.) – After winning a Class 1A state championship as a junior, Mullen is now leading the Cougars as one of the best Class 3A teams in the state. If he can cut down the nets at Gainbridge Fieldhouse again it could be hard to leave him off.
Nick Richart Nick Richart 6'9" | PF Zionsville | 2023 State IN (Zionsville H.S.) – This 6’9″ Charlotte commit would bring some additional size to the table if that is the route the team chooses to go. Richart is averaging 12.2 points and 7.7 rebounds per game.
Gage Sefton Gage Sefton 6'4" | SG Blackhawk Christian | 2023 State IN (Blackhawk Christian) – Sefton is averaging about 18 points per game for the 8-0 Braves who will take over the #1 spot in Class 2A next week.
Ashton Williamson Ashton Williamson 6'2" | PG Gary 21st Century | 2023 State #287 Nation IN (Gary 21st Century) – Was selected to the Junior All-Star team last season. Williamson stuffs the stat-sheet averaging 18.8 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 9.8 assists per game for the Cougars.
