The Mustangs went to the Class B State Tournament last season. They bring back some really nice players and I expect the Mustangs to compete for another trip to State, this year in Class A!
2021-2022 Season
The community, stakeholders, school staff, and coaches were very proud of the Mustangs last season. The team goal was to make it to the State Tournamnet and they achieved those goals. The Mustangs went 2-1 at the big dance and brought home the 5th-place trophy! All of their work and dedication certainly paid off! Waubay-Summit lost 2 seniors from last year’s team and they will miss those guys on both ends. The 2022-2023 team is looking forward to the upcoming season, they bring back some great talent but they will also need some new guys to step up.
Off-Season
The Mustang off-season consisted of weekly workouts and team camps. They built chemistry and they improved as the summer progressed. They will be ready to make some noise in Class A!
Key Returners
Damon Opdahl Damon Opdahl 6'0" Waubay/Summit | 2023 SD (2023) |6’0 PG|
He is coming off an All-State season and he was vital in leading the Mustangs to State. Damon’s stats for last season: 17.1 ppg, 7.8 rpg, 5 apg, 3 spg, 46.4 FG%, 36 3FG%, and 78.6 FT%. Opdahl has put in a lot of time in the weight room, he is explosive and he will be the leader of the Mustangs! Damon is a highly sought-after player by college coaches. He currently has offers from Presentation College, Dakota State, Mount Marty, Dakota Wesleyan, and interest from many more. I watched Opdahl a couple of weeks ago at the Prep Hoops Top250 Expo and he was as good as advertised! Damon was a top player, he is super skilled, very quick, scores from all levels. He is a leader and a coach on the floor. I love his intensity and competitiveness. Look for Mr. Opdahl to have a monumental senior season for the Mustangs!
Jonathan Johnston Jonathan Johnston 6'3" | SG Waubay/Summit | 2023 State SD (2023) |6’3 SG|
He is a 4-year starter and is closing in on scoring his 1,000th career point. Last season stats: 14.1 ppg, 5.6 rpg, 2.4 apg, 42 FG%, 34 3FG%, and 77 FT%. Johnston is a great shooter and he has recently added scoring with his back to the basket. Jonathan can score from deep and from mid-range with his jumper. He is smart and he knows how to manipulate the defense. Johnston is a tough matchup as he can stretch the floor as a 3-pointer shooter and he can also score around the bucket vs. smaller guards. Get ready for a big year. Johnston and Opdahl are going to be a dynamic duo!
Jackson Wohlleber (2024) |5’11 G|
Last season stats: 5.8 ppg, 2.6 rpg, 2.8 apg, 1.3 spg, 29 3FG%. This kid is a gym rat! Wohlleber spent a large amount of time in the weight room this past year and has made huge strides with his athletic ability. Jackson is an all-around team player with good handles and ball skills. Jackson sees the floor like a PG and his IQ is high. Wohlleber will also provide a scoring punch from all 3 levels.
The Mustangs will have 4 players that will compete for the other 2 starting spots. Expect Waubay-Summit to be deeper than last year’s team.
Coach Mark Amdahl Team Comments
“Our style of play will be uptempo. We will try to beat the other team down the floor before they can set their defense. Damon Opdahl Damon Opdahl 6'0" Waubay/Summit | 2023 SD is very good at controlling the pace of the game, so we will allow him to have the ball in his hands to make plays.“
“We have battled with Aberdeen Christian the last couple of years so our guys will look forward to that matchup again this year. We move to class A, so we look forward to forming new rivals in our region.“
“Groton will be the team to beat in our region. They qualified for State last year and return some very good players.”
Best of luck to the Mustangs!
