For the more traditional readers, we will be doing a preview of All State teams by classifications too. While most VHSL All State teams have two teams with 8 players on each, we have decided to simply list some of the players we expect to be on the team at the end of the season.
With that being said, here’s a look at part two of our picks for VHSL Class 5 All State candidates, looking at six players we expect to be in the conversation.
Jadon Burgess Jadon Burgess 6'3" | SF Harrisonburg | 2023 State VA | 6’4” WF | Harrisoburg 2023
Burgess is an all-around athlete who is a three sport star and has emerged over the past few years as one of the best in the Harrisonburg area. He’s a natural leader and winner who will do a little bit of everything to help his team win, he can play on the ball where he’s a good playmaker and he stuffs the stat sheet across the board too.
Carter Wesson | 6’4” WG | Albemarle 2023
Wesson was a Second Team All State selection last season and is coming into his senior season he’s set to have an even bigger year as the go-to guy. The 6’4” two guard has an all-around game as he moves well off the ball and shoots it well from deep, he can get out in transition and is a big time athlete who plays above the rim and he has good instincts on both ends of the floor.
Danzelle Coles Danzelle Coles 6'5" | SG St Anne Belefield | 2025 State VA | 6’3” CG | Highland Springs 2024
Coles was a big part of Highland Springs surprise run to the state championship last season, and now that he’ll be the go-to guy on this year’s team I expect him to be one of the top players in the Richmond area this year. He’s able to play both on and off the basketball and can get open either way, he can get hot quickly and knock down shots in succession and he’s a natural athlete with good quickness that he uses to make plays on both ends of the floor.
Abu Yarmah Abu Yarmah 6'5" | PF Patrick-Henry (Roanoke) | 2024 VA | 6’5” F | Patrick Henry-Roanoke 2024
Yarmah is one of the top players in the Roanoke area, and while he’s helped lead Patrick Henry to a lot of success over the past few years, and now it’s his turn to be the guy and he’s improved a lot over the past few years. He’s a natural athlete who can get it off the glass and play above the rim in traffic, he has improved his handle to be able to create off the bounce and his versatility and size allows him to play multiple positions.
Ben Nacey Ben Nacey 6'9" | PF Cox | 2024 State VA | 6’8” C | Cox 2024
Nacey is one of the most improved players in the 757 over the past few years, and the way he’s played this summer and fall there’s no doubt he’s going to be very productive this year. He’s excellent in the post where he can seal and finish over either shoulder, he hits the offensive glass hard for second chance opportunities and he can step out and makes his free throws too.
David Miller David Miller 6'6" | PF Green Run | 2025 State VA | 6’6” PF | Green Run 2025
While there usually aren’t underclassmen on the All State lists, Miller is emerging as one of the top young big men in the 757 and he’s on a young but talented Green Run team that could make moves this year. He’s a strong kid who is able to outmuscle bigs in the paint and finish through traffic, he’s versatile with his ability to step out and make shots or put it on the deck and he hits the glass hard on both ends of the floor.
