For the more traditional readers, we will be doing a preview of All State teams by classifications too. While most VHSL All State teams have two teams with 8 players on each, we have decided to simply list some of the players we expect to be on the team at the end of the season.
With that being said, here’s a look at part one of our picks for VHSL Class 4 All State candidates, looking at six players we expect to be in the conversation.
POY: Samuel Brannen Samuel Brannen 6'0" | CG King’s Fork | 2023 State VA | 5’11” PG | King’s Fork 2023
Brannen was a Second Team All State selection last season for a King’s Fork team that made a run to the state semifinals before falling to eventual state champs Varina, and he gets our nod for Preseason Player of the Year as the Bulldogs are the favorite for Class 4 and he’ll be the guy who gets it done for them. He’s a highly cerebral and skilled guard who can light it up from deep with consistency and range, he’s excellent in pick-and-rolls and can make plays for himself and others and he’s a big time on ball defender with great instincts.
Oumandre Harris | 6’1” CG | EC Glass 2023
Harris was a First Team All State selection last year for Glass and is one of the best players in the Lynchburg area, and he’s likely to have a big senior season as well. The 6’1” combo guard is a scrappy and all-out style player who will make all the hustle plays, he’s great in transition with his finishing ability, he can score it in bunches from multiple levels and he always seems to bring it against the best of the best.
Josh Sime Josh Sime 6'8" | PF Western Albemarle | 2023 State VA | 6’8” PF | Western Albemarle 2023
Sime was a First Team All State selection last year and he’s arguably the best public school player in the Charlottesville area. At 6’8” he commands the paint like someone who is 7 feet tall as he has good length and bounce to challenge shots and finish around the rim, he can step out on the perimeter where he can make shots and is a good passer and he has a toughness to him as he just makes winning plays.
Matin Perdue Matin Perdue 6'4" | SF Broad Run | 2023 State VA | 6’4” WF | Broad Run 2023
Perdue is set to have a breakout senior season at Broad Run as he’s already showcased he’s one of the top shooters in the Loudoun County area. The 6’4” wing is super confident from deep and has no problem letting it fly, he gets set quickly and has deep range and he can attack closeouts and get to the midrange or to the rim where he’s a crafty finisher.
Jaden Walker | 5’10” PG | Henrico 2023
Walker was a Second Team selection last season and the Warriors’ senior guard is set for a big senior season as well. While he isn’t the biggest guy he’s super skilled as both a scorer and distributor, he shoots the basketball at a very high rate and can get hot quickly and fill it up in bunches and put up big numbers and he’s going to do so on a regular basis this year.
Aaron Brooks Aaron Brooks 5'11" | PG Courtland | 2023 State VA | 5’11” PG | Courtland 2023
Brooks wasn’t an All State selection last year but after the summer he had I expect the Courtland guard to put up big time numbers this year. He’s an absolute baller as he plays under control and knows how to get to spots off the bounce, he’s an efficient scorer who can fill it up from all three levels and can get hot quickly and he’s the type of player who could go for 30 on almost any given night.
