North Central has won three of the last four state championships in this class and they have had players such as Derrick Tezeno and Reginald Stoner represent the school as all-state performers. This preseason team is full of talented players who are a part of some of the better teams in the class. With that said, let us take a look at the players who comprise the preseason Class 1A team in Louisiana.
* All players listed in alphabetical order
1st Team
Bryson Colbert Bryson Colbert 6'2" | CG Hamilton Christian | 2023 State LA (Hamilton Christian / 6’2″)
De’Vion Lavergne De’Vion Lavergne 6'3" | CG North Central | 2023 State LA (North Central / 6’3″)
Omarion Layssard Omarion Layssard 6'2" | SG Northwood | 2023 State LA (Northwood-Lena / 6’2″)
Eric Washington Eric Washington 6'2" | CG Delhi | 2023 State LA (Delhi / 6’2″)
Jalan Washington Jalan Washington 6'1" | CG White Castle | 2023 State LA (White Castle / 6’2″)
The first team is guard-oriented. However, they are a group of players that would be 1st team selection in other classes as well. De’Vion Lavergne De’Vion Lavergne 6'3" | CG North Central | 2023 State LA is a top ten player in the 2023 class and may be one of the best two way players in the south. He plays hard at all times and competes on both ends of the floor. Omarion Layssard Omarion Layssard 6'2" | SG Northwood | 2023 State LA is a high flying guard out of north Louisiana who takes punishment going to the rim but keeps coming possession after possession. Eric Washington Eric Washington 6'2" | CG Delhi | 2023 State LA is an athletic guard/wing out of Delhi who has play-making ability as well. He will be a leader on a seasoned Bears team who has made several appearances at Marsh Madness in recent history. Jalan Washington Jalan Washington 6'1" | CG White Castle | 2023 State LA led White Castle to the state championship game last year. He is a guard who thrives in transition and driving to the rim. Bryson Colbert Bryson Colbert 6'2" | CG Hamilton Christian | 2023 State LA is a newcomer to Class 1A and he will have the ball in his hands to make decisions at Hamilton Christian this season. His ability to facilitate and score will be big for the Warriors this season.
2nd Team
Jonathan Barron Jonathan Barron 5'11" | PG Northwood-Lena | 2023 State LA (Northwood-Lena / 6’0″)
Damarcus Jack Damarcus Jack 6'3" | SF Elton | 2023 State LA (Elton / 6’2″)
Bralyn Mayfield (Lincoln Prep / 6’3″)
Gavin Richardson Gavin Richardson 5'8" | SG Ascension Catholic | 2023 State LA (Ascension Catholic / 5’10”)
McKennis Savoie McKennis Savoie 6'2" | CG North Central | 2024 State LA (North Central / 6’2″)
Gavin Richardson Gavin Richardson 5'8" | SG Ascension Catholic | 2023 State LA has been one of the better guards in his district for the past two years. His growth as a guard and maturity as a senior will have him produce on an all-state level. Damarcus Jack Damarcus Jack 6'3" | SF Elton | 2023 State LA is another all-district player who has constantly improved over the years. The season might start while he is still on the football field but I believe Jack will be a difference maker on the hardwood this season. Another football player who averaged a double-double last season was Bralyn Mayfield. The Lincoln Prep forward will do the same thing this year in my opinion with a potential Marsh Madness run in his future. McKennis Savoie McKennis Savoie 6'2" | CG North Central | 2024 State LA is a dynamic offensive player who has improved defensively. His ability to create and finish is why he is a second team performer. Closing out the second team is one of the more intelligent point guards in the class. Jonathan Barron Jonathan Barron 5'11" | PG Northwood-Lena | 2023 State LA knows how to run a show and is very good from behind the arc. His play is second team worthy and may help Northwood-Lena hoist a title at the end of the season.
