Summary – Henry Clay is an up tempo team that wants to push it in transition and score quickly. They were at their best when pressing and speeding up the game which I see them doing the rest of the season. Could be a team to keep an eye on as they have some dynamic scorers on the roster.
Brown is a score first PG with a high level understanding of the game. Great handle and really likes to control the tempo. Loves playing in transition. Three level scorer that can score from deep both off the catch and dribble. Is in constant attack mode offensively, does a good job drawing contact and getting fouled. Shot selection and decision making can be questionable at times, but he has the ability to get 20 points any given night.
Hawkins is an aggressive scorer as well. I thought he was best driving to the basket but made a couple jumpers both in the mid-range and from 3pt. Has a good shot from distance off the catch. Very efficient driving right to finish. At his best in an uptempo game in transition.
Highlights
Brown is aggressive on both ends and plays with a high motor. Catch and shoot 3pt shooter off the catch. Good touch around the basket, especially on his floaters. He is very active defensively for them trying to be disruptive getting deflections and in passing lanes. A lot of what he does leads them to easy baskets.
Peyton Mayhorn
Peyton Mayhorn
Mayhorn is a long athletic big man that affects the game mostly defensively. Has a ton of potential only being a sophomore as he will look to become more comfortable offensively. Good receiving dump offs and finishing in transition. He just needs some more experience, but will be a key piece for them this season.
Walker Spalding
Walker Spalding
Spalding is a skilled big man that has a good feel in the paint. Capable scorer in the post with his back to the basket. Made a tough right hand hook in traffic. Does a good job using his body to create space. Never seemed to get sped up when he had the ball.
I came away most impressed with Smith’s play. High IQ, always made the right play, never got sped up. Smooth wing that isn’t overly athletic but is shifty to get to the rim and crafty to finish. Great instincts. Would have liked for him to be more aggressive offensively but made the right plays. Has the ability to be an elite defender with his length to both get steals and block shots at the rim.
