The Grovers play a fun brand of basketball with an uptempo pace and they are not afraid to make it rain from beyond the arc! Kyle Card is a veteran coach for OG, he has a great basketball mind and he always seems to have him teams playing their best in March. Read below for more info for the OG Grovers!
2012-2022 Season Comments
Last season, the Grovers had an excellent run in the Region Tournament but came up a little short against Enderlin in the Region Semifinals. Oak Grove lost multiple seniors that provided great leadership on and off the court. The Grovers will need to figure out who is ready to play this season and who wants to contribute at the varsity level.
Grover Off-Season
Oak Grove lost a valuable amount of players to graduation, and because of this, they needed to put in the work this summer. The Grovers needed to learn how to play basketball with this “new look” team. Oak Grove participated in multiple team camps and they improved/made great strides from the start to the end of the summer. The Grovers played close to 30 games this past summer. They put in a ton of time and Grover Nation is excited to see what they can do this season!
Grovers
Rylee Bakkegard Rylee Bakkegard 5'11" | CG Oak Grove | 2023 State ND (2023) |5’11 G|
He will be asked to do a lot for the Grovers, especially on the offensive end. Bakkegard will be the primary ball handler for Oak Grove. He will need to provide a scoring punch. Rylee is a smart and clever player, I like his moxie on the court. He is a smooth-scoring player that will have a good chance to be an All-Region player.
Trey Hatfield Trey Hatfield 6'5" | SG Oak Grove | 2023 State ND (2023) |6’5 SG|
He will be asked to shoulder a heavy load of the offensive production. Hatfield will be one of the top players in Region 1. Trey can score from anywhere inside the volleyball line and he has improved his all-around game. Trey is a very long shooter that will be a highly productive scorer. He will have no trouble getting shots off with his length and silky-smooth jumper. Trey will be deadly from deep this winter. Hatfield will be one of the difficult matchups in Region 1.
Jon Asche (2023) |6’1 G|
He will be another player to watch for the Grovers this season. Asche is a heady player that can put up points in a variety of ways. Besides being a skilled player, Jon will also be a leader for the Grovers.
Luke Johnson Luke Johnson 6'5" | PF Oak Grove | 2024 ND (2024) |6’5 PF|
I am not sure what his role will be this season with OG. I do know that that Johnson is a big, strong, and tough kid that will provide a post presence when on the court. He might be a bit raw yet but the BIG Johnson has potential. Luke is a hard worker, a grinder, a physical rebounder, and an intriguing post defender. Only time will tell how much varsity burn Johnson will get this season.
Up-and-Comers
The Grovers have a nice talent pool in their middle school programs. They also have an exciting group of players in their freshmen class.
Coach Kyle Card comments on Grover basketball
“Typically we like to get up and down the floor and play a fast game. However, we will need to mix things up a little this year, based on our personal.”
Coach Card talks Oak Grove rivals
“Kindred, Central Cass, and Northern Cass are always rivalry games for us. Typically they are competitive contests and have a great Class B atmosphere.”
Kyle Card comments on the top teams in Region 1
“Kindred and Central Cass both bring back a lot of talent from last year, and are well-coached. Sargent County also has a lot of talent returning, so I look for these 3 teams to be towards the top of Region 1.“
