I was able to attend the Friday slate of games at St Bernard and here’s a look at some of the top point guards I saw.
1. Juslin Bodo – SoCal Academy 2023
I’ve seen Bodo play at a few different showcases recently and he’s consistently been one of the most impressive big men. He has good size and is very active around the basket. Good hands and can finish strong at the rim, good finisher off lobs. He has good footwork and patience in the post, can hit defenders with a little spin move. Good rebounder especially on the offensive end. He has the tools to be a good interior shot blocker/defender.
2. Sage Wayans – LA Premier White 2023
Wayans is a big that runs the floor well and can finish strong at the rim. Sometimes has a tendency to not go up as strong as he could at the basket but definitely finish well when he sets his mind to it. He showed good patience in the post, using fakes to get the defense in the air. He can space the floor a little bit and shoot the midrange jumper off the catch. Has the ability to be a good shot blocker.
3. Isaac Sowell – Compton Dominguez 2023
Sowell was one of the most impressive bigs at the event. He can make moves off the dribble to the basket and has a soft touch at the rim. He can draw fouls at the rim and get himself to the free-throw line. He was comfortable playing with his back to the basket too. Sets solid screens and rolls to the rim off the pick well. Good rebounder who boxes out properly. Defensively he is active protecting the paint and altering shots. Throws solid outlet passes to start the break.
4. Spencer Ezewiro – LA Premier White 2023
Ezewiro has good size and is strong in the paint. Where he was most impressive to me was his defensive activity. He protects the paint, blocking and altering shots and he can body up well and hold his position when being posted up. He moves well without the ball rolling to the rim and has good hands ready for passes. Good finisher at the rim. He can shoot the midrange jumper as well.
