The senior class is looking to end their varsity careers on a high note with some players having the ability to break out. Here are the 2023 under the radar guards set to breakout this winter.
Riley Flood Riley Flood 6'2" | CG Union | 2023 State NJ , 6’1 CG Union
Flood does a variety of different things on the floor for the Farmers, which should allow for him to have a big senior season. The 6’1 guard attacks the basket with a purpose as he explodes off the floor for dunks and is unafraid of drawing contact around the basket. Flood has a good handle and rarely makes bad decisions with the ball in his hands. He is a tough on-ball defender and is a strong rebounder. Flood is a gamer who does whatever it takes to help his team win games on both ends of the floor.
David Haywood David Haywood 6'3" | PG Overbrook | 2023 State NJ , 6’3 PG Overbrook
Haywood’s collegiate future may lie on the gridiron, but he will be making plays for the Rams on the hardwood in 2022-23. The 6’3 guard plays with good court vision as he’s able to find his open teammates in the half court and can make tough passes in traffic. Haywood is a good finisher around the basket and does not mind contact. He rips down rebounds on both ends of the floor and uses his athleticism to make plays on the defensive end. Haywood is a long floor general whose ability to run the offense effectively will be key to Overbrook’s success this season.
Matthew Nervi Matthew Nervi 6'1" | PG Scotch Plains-Fanwood | 2023 State NJ , 6’1 PG Scotch Plains-Fanwood
Nervi will be a guard prospect to watch in Union County as he’ll have the ball in his hands more in 2022-23. The 6’1 guard has a nice release on his jumper and can get hot from distance in a hurry. Nervi is more than just a shooter as he can also put the ball on the floor and finish around the basket. He knows how to get his teammates involved in the half court and is an underrated defender. Nervi will be the go-to guy for the Raiders this season, which will help his stock in a big way this season.
David Gheysens David Gheysens 6'4" | SG Moorestown | 2023 State NJ , 6’4 SG Moorestown
Gheysens led the Quakers in scoring last season and should do it again in his final varsity season. The 6’4 guard has a smooth shooting stroke as he wastes little motion and rises up with confidence on his jumper. Gheysens has a good mid-range game and is capable of finishing around the rim. He moves well without the ball in his hands and slides his feet on the defensive end. Gheysens is a sharpshooter from distance whose ability to knock down shots from distance along with his ability to get to the rim will be something to watch in 2022-23.
Brandon Rodriguez Brandon Rodriguez 6'0" | CG West Side | 2023 State NJ , 6’0 CG West Side
Rodriguez will have the keys to West Side’s offense as the Rough Riders have to replace four of their top five scorers from last season. The 6’0 guard has a quick release on his jumper and can shoot either off the catch or bounce. Rodriguez is more than just a shooter as he can blow by his defender off the dribble and finish around the rim. He is unafraid of drawing contact around the basket and has the ability to play either on or off the ball. Rodriguez had six 20-point games last season and should eclipse that mark in the 2022-23 season.
