Wesley Yates Wesley Yates 6'4" | SG Beaumont United | 2023 State #36 Nation TX 2023 6’4 Beaumont United High School
Wesley showed off his dominance and showed why he is a top prospect after committing to the University of Washington in the auditorium of the gym this weekend! He is a fearless scorer with a tremendous frame who bullies his opponents down low with his strength and how well he can get to the rim. Yates has been a dominant scorer his entire high school career, and it is not hard to figure out why he is widely considered one of the top prospects in the country, (ESPN Top 40). He has a nasty step back he can get to, and always creates space with his crossovers due to how much of a threat he is as a freight train downhill. Wesley’s versatility from the guard position is at an elite level, calmly creating, scoring and slashing with the best of them. It is a joy to watch him compete, constantly wreaking havoc with and without the ball. His calmness with a live dribble and how he is able to control the tempo of the game is at an elite point guard type level, and it allows him to run the show for Beaumount United and keep his teammates involved. He has some high level shooters all around him who will punish you for helping on him in the paint too often, expect United to make some noise this year as they step into 6A competition! He was involved in some of the most high profile games of the weekend, taking on power house after power house in a very tough schedule.
Divine Ugochukwu Divine Ugochukwu 6'3" | CG Fort Bend Clements | 2024 State TX chukwu 2024 6’3 Fort Bend Clements High School
Divine is one of the best guards in the state of Texas, especially in Houston. He has the ability to be the complete focal point of an offense, calmly hunting for his shot and getting to his spots across all three levels. He is the ideal combo guard, able to take over the ball and push the tempo if necessary or spot up in the corners and work off the ball to get his own shots. He is tasked with playing more out of the pick and roll, with two dynamic 6’9+ forwards who are great rim runners. I was very impressed by how well he was able to attack the defense in any situation within the half court, even after facing considerable defensive pressure. His aggressiveness bleeds through into all aspects of his game, fearlessly attacking the rim and putting pressure on the defense. With Clements, he is tasked with scoring at least 18 a night, and he does so with ease. His ability to play with pace and change directions is already at an extremely high level. His shiftiness will easily translate to the next level.
Anthony Bates Jr 2024 6’3 Katy Seven Lakes High School
Highlights
Anthony is a skilled guard who can operate as his team’s point guard or have the entire offense run through his steady shot selection and the ease in which he can score across all three levels. He is great at manipulating the defense with his patience, controlling the tempo of the game and dominating in the open court. This summer, Bates showed off his versatility, playing both on and off the ball with Houston Hoops. Now he is back to running the show at Seven Lakes, and does so at a very high level. He has a dominant big man- ( Josh Akpovwa Josh Akpovwa 6'7" | C Katy Seven Lakes | 2023 State TX 6’8 2023) who recently committed to the University of Incarnate Ward. Bates and he have a special connection out of the pick and roll, as he patiently manipulates the defense, running his defender into the screen and searching for that glimmer of separation to make a high level decision. What makes Bates an elite level prospect is not his stellar athleticism, tight handle, or high level shot making ability but his patience in every situation, and his overall basketball IQ and feel for the game. Coaches, you NEED to check this kid out if you have not already, high GPA, leader on and off the court, and a great kid! Everyone who I have spoken to about this young man has had nothing but glowing things to say, both his play-style and game but also his character.
Derrick Buckner 2025 6′ Atascocita High School
Derrick Buckner
Derrick Buckner
Derrick is going to make some real noise this season with Atascocita, calmly running the show from the point guard position. What makes Buckner an elite weapon is his confidence in his jumper and how easily he is able to get his own shot off over the defense. I have gotten to watch him compete multiple times now, and what always stands out to me is how hard he is willing to go. His motor and willingness to go the extra mile after loose balls, or slide over and put his body on the line to draw a charge, Buckner showed an ability to do it all. He moves his feet very well, keeping anyone he wants in front of him, and forcing them to get bad shots off. He was going up against one of the most talented scorers in the 2024 class in one matchup I saw (see below) and forced him into tough shots and made his life living hell after his willingness to pick up all 92 feet of the court. Buckner is not the only talented 2025 kid from Atascocita, they have a whole bunch of talented young kids who are coming up this season, with a after coming off losing a plethora of seniors. Buckner’s name will quickly rise in the rankings among the state this season, so coaches get on this kid EARLY!
Michael Collins Michael Collins 6'1" | PG Shadow Creek | 2025 State TX 2025 6′ Shadow Creek High School
Collins is a DOG at the point guard position, an aggressive scorer at the rim, but also a shifty play-maker and an intense defender. His game reminds me a lot of Patrick Beverly, with how hard he competes every time he is between the lines. I love his motor and how much he wreaks havoc on both ends of the court. He is a willing facilitator, creating looks for his teammates off of his aggressiveness and how easily he gets to the rim. I loved how easily he is able to fight through contact, using his aggressiveness at showing off how strong he is every time he gets two feet in the paint. He is not afraid to let you know he dog walked you, constantly staring down his opponent’s and striking fear into their heart with his infectious energy and play style. Collins is another TALENTED 2025 kid, one who is going to garner real attention from college coaches real soon, do not be surprised when you see his name come up again!
