Here are five “breakout candidates” from Central Kansas:
Meyer (pictured) was a key component to Buhler’s state run last year, but he will play his final season at Hutch. The long wing player is known for being a zone-busting three point shooter, but he can do a lot more than shoot. He glides down the floor to transition opportunities and he can finish with some creativity in the lane or at the goal. He’s confident and athletic. Look for him to benefit from a lot of kickouts from Hutch point guard Garrett Robertson Garrett Robertson 5’10” | PG Hutchinson | 2023 State KS .

Thompson was an important piece of the state-bound McPherson team a year ago. But with Seth Madron lost to graduation, Thompson may see his workload expand. He set himself up with a strong summer. He is an athletic playmaker who loves to play downhill. He gets out in transition and can finish or dish with a flourish. McPherson has a good group of junior guards, so it will be interesting to see how they work together.

This big man worked hard this summer to be ready for a big senior season. He can shoot it high and is capable of dominating on the block. Watch for him to really boost his 7.5 points per game a year ago. He blocks shots and is physical, so his 5.4 rebounds a game should go up a bunch too. Russell returns a bunch of seniors and should be a team to watch.
A guard who is physical and plays through contact, Peintner impressed at the recent Kansas Top 250 Expo as a guy ready for a bigger role on the varsity level. He is versatile, able to do a lot of things with the ball and capable of guarding multiple positions.
Dicks is a dedicated, hard-working guard who has top-notch shooting ability and can be a scorer. He has a nice set of ball skills and can hit floaters or jumpers off the bounce. He can handle the ball but may be best suited as an off-the-ball wing player. He is a team-first guy who doesn’t force bad shots. Great Bend returns a lot of talent from a team that hopes to make a big improvement.
