Today, we’ll take a look at part one of the players transferring in or within of the state of VA and what they bring to their new team.
Donovan Bass Donovan Bass 6'1" | PG Hayfield | 2023 State VA -Briscoe | 6’0” PG 2023
Previous School: West Potomac
New School: Hayfield
The defending Class 6 state champions look poised for a repeat and the big thing they needed to replace was their backcourt as their three star guards were all seniors who graduated, and Bass-Briscoe is one who fell right into their lap and fits what they need perfectly. He’s a lightning quick guard who sets the tone on both ends of the floor, he can run the show and puts others in situations to succeed and he can create for himself and others both in the pick-and-roll and in isolation situations.
Desmond Roberts Desmond Roberts 6'5" | SF St Anne’s Belfield | 2023 State VA | 6’5” F 2023
Previous School: VES
New School: STAB
Roberts, who is a native of Charlottesville, heads back home to STAB this season after spending the last two seasons at VES and he’ll bring a huge punch to the Saints who were lacking athleticism at the wing and forward positions. The 6’5” Roberts is extremely well built and strong and has the strength to play in the post and moves well enough to play on the perimeter, he is a menace in transition and when he gets downhill as he’s a super explosive athlete who can play well above the rim and he has improved on his shot making to go along with his ability to defend and rebound well at the position too.
Jackson Coppock | 6’6” F 2023
Previous School: Covenant
New School: STAB
Coppock is another addition to the STAB team that brings even more athleticism at the forward spot as he transfers across town from Covenant and provided a big spark for them this summer during the live periods. The 6’6” forward is long, strong and super explosive around the rim getting put backs and flying in transition for big time slams, he can step out and is a pretty consistent shooter from deep and he plays with a terrific motor and toughness to him as well.
Dante Kearse Dante Kearse 6'5" | SF Hargrave Military Academy | 2023 State VA | 6’5” F 2023
Previous School: Manchester
New School: Hargrave
Kearse will head to Hargrave for his senior season after having an impressive last two seasons at Manchester where it was fun to watch him develop his game while also keeping his all out style of play as well. The 6’5” forward plays much bigger than he is as he rebounds over bigger players and uses his strength and high motor to outplay other forwards, he is a mismatch as he can step out and put in the on the deck and knock down shots and he just makes winning plays on both ends of the floor.
Elijah Mitchell Elijah Mitchell 6'5" | PF Oak Hill | 2023 State VA | 6’6” F 2023
Previous School: William Fleming
New School: Oak Hill Academy
Mitchell was one of the best players in Roanoke over the past few years and he heads to Oak Hill to play under new Head Coach Yerrick Stoneman at the national powerhouse. The 6’6” hybrid forward is a position less players who is a big time athlete that gets downhill aggressively and plays well above the rim, he’s physical and rebounds well on both ends of the floor and he can take bigs out on the perimeter where he can knock down shots when he’s open and attack in straight lines.
