Our next feature is the reigning Class 2A runner-up Sagemont Lions out of the South Florida area. The Lions are coming off a 66-49 loss to Orlando Christian Prep in the 2A championship game last March.
HC: David Roe, 6th Season
Class: 2A
2021-2022 Record: 25-7
Key Returners: Tynan Becker Tynan Becker 6’7″ | SF Sagemont | 2023 State FL 6-7 SF (2023)
Becker plays with a complete edge and can score from anywhere on the floor. Last season, Becker averaged 11.8 points, 4.7 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.5 steals per game for the Lions. Becker can make plays whether it’s his passing game or with his defense. With Becker’s length and size he can make it difficult for offensive players when they attack the basket.
Cameron Gibson
Cameron Gibson
Key Returners: Cameron Gibson 6-3 CG (2023)
Gibson is a strong and versatile scorer, as well as a fearless leader when it comes to in need of a basket. Last season for the Lions, Gibson averaged 12.3 points, 4.7 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 2.1 steals per game. Gibson is a pure shooter as he shot 52 percent from the field and 81 percent from the free throw line last season for the Lions. With the departure of Adrian Cruz, Gibson will likely handle the point guard duties this upcoming season, as the Lions will look to reach the state championship game for the second consecutive season.
Key Returners: Ashton Smith Ashton Smith 6’2″ | PG Sagemont | 2023 State FL 6-2 PG (2023)
Smith is a dynamic playmaker whether he’s facilitating or finishing at the rim. Smith averaged 9.7 points, 3.9 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game last season for the reigning state runner-ups. During the AAU season with Showtime Ballers, Smith stood out with his leadership and didn’t have the spotlight seem to phase him. Smith can also score in all three phases, whether it’s at the rim, mid-range or from beyond the arc.
Kenneth Lopez
Kenneth Lopez
Sleeper Prospect: Kenneth Lopez 6-9 PF (2024)
Lopez, who is in his 2nd season playing basketball here in the United States after coming over from Puerto Rico has a smooth touch to his game. With his length, Lopez can get you put-backs or blocking shots at the rim. Lopez doesn’t typically see the court a lot, but in his minutes he is a valuable piece and presence to the Sagemont frontcourt.
Key Newcomer: Maxx Martinez 6-3 SG (2023)
Martinez comes to Sagemont from Pembroke Pines Charter, where he plays with a bigger edge than his size shows. At this summer’s Best of the South, Martinez averaged 14 points, 4.1 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal per game where he stood out in front of dozens of college coaches. Martinez is a pure shooter from long distance, including a 40-point performance with 10 made three-pointers at the Hoop Exchange. Martinez is also fearless when it comes to attacking the basket.
