Continue ReadingThere were plenty of offensive opportunities at the PrepHoops Oregon Top 250 Expo and you better bet shooters had a field day. Three-point bombs were launched left and right and a handful of guys really made their mark with their ability to sink daggers from long range. Here’s a look at the top shooters from the Beaverton Hoop YMCA on Sunday.
Izzy Golden Izzy Golden 6'0" | PG Ashland | 2023 State OR (2023 Ashland)
Golden got off to a hot start with his very first game, drawing oohs and aahs with his pull-up and step-back threes from beyond the three-point arc. He’s the type of shooter that may be a little streaky but when he gets hot, he’s very difficult to stop. Golden simply knows how to create space for himself with the ball in his hands and his shot release is quick and compact.
Max Elmgren Max Elmgren 6'0" | CG Beaverton | 2024 State OR (2024 Beaverton)
He may have only played in two games before leaving with his Beaverton High School teammates to attend fall league, but Elmgren certainly made his mark on the event. He was absolutely deadeye from long range with his lefty, compact shooting stroke and most of the time the makes were all net. Spot up, pull-up, coming off screens – he hit them all. Don’t let his size fool you or the Beavers junior will kill you from distance.
Connor Oertel Connor Oertel 6'3" | SG West Salem | 2024 State OR (2024 West Salem)
Oertel was rock solid in the game that we watched and from we heard, he was consistently good throughout the day. The junior has a very smooth-looking stroke and from what’ve observed, is especially good on the baseline. So no surprise at all when he hit a game-winning jumper to help his team win their final game, it was from the deep right corner.
Blake Thune Blake Thune 6'3" | CG Mountainside | 2023 State OR (2023 Mountainside)
We came into the event expecting to see Thune rain some threes and that’s exactly what he did in the action of his we saw. In particular, he’s deadly from the corners on catch-and-shoot opportunities as teammates found him early and often for those scores. Thune also was able to create a bit off the dribble to display a more versatile offensive game.
Nate Stiffler Nate Stiffler 6'4" | SF Thurston | 2025 State OR (2025 Thurston)
Shooters with size are a luxury and Thurston head coach Blaine Liberatore has one with young Stiffler. The 6-foot-5 sophomore has really nice form and a quick release on his shot and is capable of hitting them from anywhere on the floor. At the event he showed he was much more than just a standstill shooter too as he ran the floor for buckets including one two-handed slam.
Dominic Papworth Dominic Papworth 6'2" | CG Franklin | 2024 State OR (2024 Franklin)
Shooters don’t necessarily have to be just marksmen from deep and Papworth was a perfect example of that on Sunday. The 6-foot-2 junior was a master of the midrange with a number of different pull-ups from 15 feet out whether it was in the halfcourt setting or on the break. He had the opportunity to show off his athleticism too with one rim-rattling jam over a defender in the team’s last game of the day.
Braydon Ace Long Braydon Ace Long 6'0" | CG Willamette | 2024 State OR (2024 Willamette)
If there’s one thing we’ve come to expect to see from Long it’s him hitting threes and he was as advertised at the Top 250 Expo. The Willamette junior is solid off the catch-and-shoot but is even more comfortable using his crafty dribble to create a bit of space for himself and hit from distance over his dizzied defender. Not just a long-range bomber, Long also was able to get to the basket and score over bigger players.
Asson Gelly Asson Gelly 5'11" | PG McDaniel | 2025 State OR (2025 Wells)
Gelly came into the event as an unknown to us but he quickly put his name on the board by draining seven threes in his team’s first game. He may lack some size but there’s no question he’s quick and not afraid to put it up from long range. With Wells losing the state’s most prolific three-point maker to transfer, new head coach Jonny Canalin has a guy ready to come right in with Gelly.
Justin Han Justin Han 6'1" | SG Valley Catholic | 2025 State OR (2025 Valley Catholic)
After going scoreless in his first game – largely due to barely touching the ball – Han got his chance the rest of the event and showed off one of the smoother-looking strokes in the event. The sophomore is practically money with his feet set on the catch-and-shoot but he also showed he could use a couple of dribbles to set up his jumper as well.
