We’ll take a look at positional rankings, ranking the guards, wings and bigs.
Here’s a look at part two of the guards rankings, ranking 15-6 of the point guards and combo guards in the class of 2024.
15) Ulysses Young Ulysses Young 6'0" | CG Oscar Smith | 2024 State VA | 5’11” PG | Oscar Smith (#49 Overall)
Young had a breakout sophomore season at Smith and has continued his success as a natural playmaker for Team Loaded 757 this summer. He’s one of the top pass first point guards you’ll find in the state as he has terrific pace and changes speeds well off the bounce, he sees the game a few steps ahead of everyone else and makes great reads while making both tough and easy passes and he can get a bucket when he needs to while also setting the tone on both ends of the floor.
14) Wesley Williams Wesley Williams 6'0" | CG Fairfax Christian | 2024 VA | 6’1” PG | Fairfax Christian (#48 Overall)
Williams transferred to Fairfax Christian and reclassified to the 2024 class from Independence where he was a catalyst for the new school, and should step into big minutes for a team needing a point guard. He’s a true point who has a great command of the game and a great overall skillset as he can create for others off the bounce, he can knock down shots from deep and get to the pull-up and he doesn’t get sped up and make many mistakes with the ball in his hands.
13) Jason Penn Jason Penn 6'2" | PG Marshall | 2024 State VA | 5’11” PG | George Marshall (#47 Overall)
Penn is a new addition to the 2024 class as he’s been on a tear with a talented Nova Cavs team this summer, and he’s another floor general who just flat out brings winning traits to the basketball court. He is quick off the bounce and changes speeds and directions well, he’s strong with the ball when he gets in the lane and has great footwork to finish in traffic and he can hit open shots as well as make other players better offensively.
12) Alex Chaikin Alex Chaikin 6'4" | SG Trinity Episcopal | 2024 State VA | 6’3” PG | Trinity Episcopal (#46 Overall)
Chaikin is a player who may not look the part but he can flat out go get it as a point guard and he has good size at the lead guard position as well. He’s a terrific shooter whether he’s on the ball or coming off of a screen, he understands angles and has a great midrange game with the ability to finish over bigger and more athletic defenders and he brings a grit and toughness to his game that others follow.
11) Jamari Hodnett Jamari Hodnett 6'2" | PG Bishop Ireton | 2024 State VA | 6’0” PG | Bishop Ireton (#45 Overall)
Hodnett is the type of player that may not every lead his team in scoring, but he’s going to execute the game plan and do all of the little things to help his team win. He’s a strong guard who can play through contact and doesn’t turn it over, he lives in the lane and is a great playmaker that can pick his spots and score it when he needs to and he is an excellent defender who moves his feet and makes the hustle plays.
10) Julian Rivera Julian Rivera 6'1" | PG Highland | 2025 State VA | 6’1” PG | Highland School (#44 Overall)
Rivera is an excellent floor general who has a great overall skillset and flat out knows how to play the game at the point guard position. He can execute the game plan and sets the tone on both ends of the floor, he has a very high IQ and is a good playmaker off the bounce and he’s a reliable shooter who can also finish in the paint over bigger defenders.
9) Jahleel Jackson | 6’1” PG | Potomac School (#39 Overall)
Jackson is one of the more underrated point guards in the DMV area as he has all of the attributes you look for in a lead guard and more. The 6’1” lefty is a dog on the defensive end that will guard the length of the floor and is a good help side defender, he has a tight handle to get in the lane and he’s a good playmaker who is unselfish and he’s a knock down shooter from deep with effortless range out past the NBA line.
8) Shamar Sisco Shamar Sisco 5'10" | PG Freedom-Woodbridge | 2024 VA | 5’10” PG | Freedom-Woodbridge (#30 Overall)
Sisco is a fast rising prospect who is having a great summer with DC Premier and was part of a formidable trio of guards at Freedom-Woodbridge last season. He’s a very talented lead guard with a tight handle and the ability to get in the lane and play through contact, he’s an excellent shooter from deep who can knock it down off the catch or in the midrange off the bounce and he’s a big time on ball defender who makes ball handlers very uncomfortable.
7) Gavin Cormany Gavin Cormany 6'0" | CG Oak Hill Red | 2025 State VA | 6’0” CG | Radford (#20 Overall)
The son of legendary Radford HC Rick Cormany and the brother of incoming Navy freshman Cam Cormany, the youngest Cormany has some serious game and should be one of the top players in the Roanoke/New River area over the next few years. He has a grit and toughness that he brings to the floor you have to love, he’s a big time shooter from deep who can get hot quickly and knock down shots in succession and he has a good handle for a combo as he is crafty off the bounce and can create space and knock down shots.
6) Kennard Wyche Jr. | 5’7” PG | Varina (#19 Overall)
Wyche may not be the biggest guy when he’s on the floor, well he never is, but he’s the type of guard you love to have on your team and hate to play against. The 5’7” lead guard makes a positive impact every time he’s on the floor as he is a pesky on ball defender who gets under ball handlers and turns them multiple times while he guards them the length of the floor, he has a great IQ and understanding of the game as a playmaker and he has terrific finishing ability off either foot and with either hand. He’s a nightmare to matchup with and if you think you can overlook him because of your size you’ll figure out very quickly that was a mistake.
