There are plenty of college coaches in attendance, and some of these kids in attendance have a real chance to turn some attention their way.
Jeffery Scott 2023 5’9 Mansfield Summit High School (3P Elite)
Jeffery was easily one of the hardest working players on the entire gym, constantly scrapping to steal the ball or get to the rim with his relentless pursuit of the rim and poking the ball free with intense on ball defense. He calmly controlled the tempo of the game in the half court and made very smart decision in the pick and roll. He consistently got around his opponents, both out of the pick and roll but also with his handle in the open court. I was very impressed with how routinely he made the defense pay by finishing over taller defenders with a quick floater or a strong layup after getting them to bite on a head fake. He is not just a slasher either, he confidently pulled up from the mid-range and has led his team in scoring for 2/3 the three games this weekend.
His willingness to do all of the dirty work allowed him to get extra possessions for his team, as well as quickly end them for his opponent. There were two instances in which he simply snatched a rebound from a 6’8 forward and quickly went back up with it for an easy two points. His heart on the court was very impressive, and it seemed to inspire his teammates to work even harder. He has all of the intangibles that a college coach could ever ask for.
Wesley Edison Wesley Edison 6'3" | SF Lawrence Free State | 2024 KS 2024 6’3 Lawrence Free State High School, Kansas (Buddy Buckets KS 16U)
Wesley is an intense on ball defender who makes extra possessions for his team due to his hard work on the defensive end of things. He is a weapon defensively, who is not afraid to be switched onto bigs or lock you up on the perimeter. Edison holds his ground against bigger opponents, and is not afraid to bang when his opponents think they have a size mismatch He is scrappy and loves getting underneath his opponents skin. Offensively, he made good decisions passing the ball ahead and using his ability to catch and shoot to punish the defense for a weak closeout. If he felt they were closing out hard, he calmly put the ball on the floor and attacked the rim and forced a second defender to come contest him.
Zyrin Brantley 2023 5’11 Monterey High School (GPS West Texas)
Zyrin is a confident guard who loves to turn the corner on his opponent, but also score off the bounce in bunches. He loves scoring in the mid-range, calmly and quickly pulling up in front of his opponent. He is quick and shifty and got around defenders with ease. Whether he was manipulating them with jab steps out of the triple threat or changing his speeds, he always seemed to be a step ahead of his opponents. He used it as a weapon in the full court, pushing the tempo and getting to the rim. He unselfishly made shovel passes and dump off passes to his bigs after drawing a second defender. He sees the floor like a true point guard in the half court as well, calmly making the right reads in the pick and roll.
Robert Garmon 2024 6’0 Lubbock Cooper High School (LBK Elite 17U)
Robert is a lightning quick guard who can get to the rim whenever he wants, due to the threat that he is to score off the bounce from all three levels of the court. He scored multiple times with a nice pull up jumper at the free throw line, and multiple times beyond the arc after manipulating the pick and roll. He even hit a three and got hit and converted the free throw for the rare four point play. His confidence in his ability to score off the bounce was very impressive and it bled into his teammates as well. He is unselfish and always made the right reads in the full court to find teammates leading the play. He controlled the game like a point guard as he manipulated the game at will and used his shiftiness to get around his opponents.
Matthew Gonzalez Matthew Gonzalez 5'11" | PG San Antonio Marshall | 2023 TX 2023 6’0 Marshall High School (DC Kings SA 17U)
Matthew is a skilled scorer from all levels of the floor, yet what sets him apart from other scorers is his natural point guard instincts and incredibly tight handle. You can tell he has spent countless hours working on tightening up his handle, using it to routinely get around his opponents and force a second defender to come up and react. I was very impressed with his ability to make good decisions while still going top speed hurling into the paint. When he gets downhill, defense do not know what to do with him as he scores so easily from the mid-range and as he attacks the rim. However his best plays for his teammates are often made with him getting to the rack, and finding an open teammate on the back side of the play. His scoring prowess is going to make him a household name in the San Antonio area with how easily he gets it done beyond the arc. He is a complete four level scorer with the ability to threaten the defense from beyond the three point line. His aggressiveness lets him hunt for his shot, yet his consistency is such a difference maker. Gonzalez is a name you cannot soon forget, and if you are in the San Antonio area, be sure to get out to a game of his next season, you will not be disappointed!
