Weekend Standouts
May is here. What does the “AAU May” portion include? The May month is a touch ambiguous. Some AAU Directors use the month to train and prepare for June/July, the months or heaviest evaluation. Others elect to travel and play, despite the inaccessibility of May tournaments for college coaches.
In this modern age, college coaches and everybody is able to watch chunks of tournaments either live or on-demand. Where the May events used to occur in a seemingly foreign, fuzzy land of rumor and video snippets, there is now more to digest and consume for the non-attendees.
The following hoopers played very well.
Gabe Davenport Gabe Davenport 6'0" | PG Columbia Academy | 2025 State TN (Columbia Academy) was flaming hot, hitting 14 three-pointers over the course of two games. GD hit for 29 points (6 3’s) and then 30 points (8 3’s) within those two contests. His name earned Watch List placement back in December and he will absolutely be ranked when Class of 2025 rankings debut. One of Davenport’s opponents was 865 Elite, a newish program from the Knoxville-area.
Jairus Terry, the Class of 2023 Fayette-Ware guard continued his strong spring. Facing Ruthless AAU, he put up 22p, 5r, 4a.
Tylon Chatman Tylon Chatman 6'0" | PG Haywood | 2023 State TN (Hawks Elite 17u) managed approximately 13 ppg this weekend after a wonderful April. High school and AAU teammate Janerus Snipe put up about 10 points per, according to Hawks Elite Director John Carlisle.
Both Jaylon Moore and Caden Johnson Caden Johnson 5'10" | PG Boyd-Buchanan | 2023 State TN thrived for Warrior Culture Basketball. The 6-foot-7 Moore lived at the free throw line, while Caden scored in a variety of ways.
Joshua Burchette 6-5 Central (TN) Memphis wing was very close to home and he played like it. I describe him as a wing. But he essentially played the point for Weasel Elite. Did this due to his well rounded ball skills. Plays with his head up and has a nice handle for size. Physically has the “two L’s” going for him. Has a lengthy frame and is left handed. Is a long strider and covers a lot of space in the open court. While skinny. Was not afraid of contact and was able to finish through it. -Jonathan Gilbert
Kamryn Eden (Stars Basketball 17u) beat a buzzer on a scrambled play, to win a game a LakePoint.
