Continue ReadingThe Southwest Region in the United States has some serious talent due to Texas and Oklahoma and their histories. Adidas was no exception as I was able to see various prospects from Southern Assault and Team Trae Young. This piece will focus on the 5 best guys I watched from 15U, 16U, and 17U action.
Finley Bizjack Finley Bizjack 6'5" | CG Byron Nelson | 2023 State #131 Nation TX 6’5 PG (2023) Southern Assault (Byron Nelson)
Bizjack has a great blowby speed, acceleration, and body control. I liked his ability to get to the rim constantly and consistently. Has a great defensive mindset and shifts to the correct spots. Currently a top 15 prospect in Texas’ 2023 class. Likely a MM/LM prospect.
Isaiah Manning Isaiah Manning 6'8" | SF Mansfield Legacy | 2023 State #143 Nation TX 6’7 SF (2023) Southern Assault (Mansfield Legacy)
Manning brings size and length on the blocks. Nice filled out frame to go along with a motor on the glass. To go along with the size, Manning has a good athletic arsenal he uses in combination to be a great rebounding threat. His rebounding makes him a target for scholarship programs.
Khai Brown 6’2 PG (2025) Team Trae Young (Putnam City North)
Brown might have been my favorite prospect to watch throughout the weekend. The lefty stands only 6’2 but plays like he’s far bigger. Great arsenal on the offensive end with plenty of upside and potential. Brown impressed me with his ability to make shots in spot-up situations and contested. His ability to defend on-ball is impressive as is his ability to alter shot trajectories with his speed. Brown could translate into a MM+ prospect as he continues to improve and grow.
Curtis Nickson Jr. 6’6 SF (2025) Team Trae Young (Weatherford)
Nickson brought size for Team Trae Young and gave Super Friendz issues containing him in their Sunday morning matinee. Currently plays more like a wing, but has the body to be a PF should he add a few more inches. Showed an ability to play in the paint and with his back to the basket while also stretching out and putting the ball on the floor as needed. Having a teammate like Khai Brown allows Nickson to take advantage of lighter defense on himself and thus capitalize on offensive opportunities.
James Vinson IV 6’10 SF (2024) Southern Assault (St. Michael’s Catholic)
Vinson looks more like a 17U player with his figure and length, which only makes him more intriguing of a prospect in terms of his potential in recruiting. Standing at 6’10, Vinson has a nice overall game highlighted by his touch at the rim and under the basket. He controls the paint and can finish with authority. I liked his overall style of play and can see him developing into a true Center as he adds more to his frame currently.
