Many times the 6th-Man of a team can be the X-factor and difference-maker in close games. A great 6th-man tends to wear many hats and will thrive in whatever is needed of them. If teams are going to make a run in the playoffs, they will need a productive 6th-Man. In this article, we are taking a look at these types of players from North Dakota and South Dakota.
Sensational Sixth-Men
(Alphabetically arranged)
Abe Holscher (2023) |6-0 G| Aberdeen Christian
He is a key piece for the #4 Ranked team in Class B. Abe does a great job in the role of 6th-man and he plays exactly how you’d want someone off the bench to play. Holscher plays with a ton of energy and is a good 3-pt shooter. He came in vs Potter County earlier this year and scored 16 points off the bench, hitting 4 threes while giving the Knights a huge lift. The ability to provide an instant spark is what you look for in a 6th man and that is exactly what Abe does for the Knights.
Aiden Myers (2023) |6-1 G| Mitchell
He is the backup point guard for Mitchell. Myers comes in and guards the opposing team’s best perimeter player. Aiden has really improved his jump shot and ball-handling ability. He gives his all and does whatever is asked of him by the coaches. Aiden has set himself up to have a great senior season next year.
Alex Proctor Alex Proctor 6'1" | SG Fargo Davies | 2022 State ND (2022) |6-1 SG| Fargo Davies
He is extremely athletic. Every time I look at Twitter, Proctor is making splashy plays in the open court or slamming home an eye-popping DUNK. Alex is still learning the game and he has huge upside. He is bouncy and explosive which allows him to make plays all over the court. The more comfortable that Alex gets the more impact he will make for the Eagles.
Bennet Burd (2022) |6-0 G| Shanley
He is the first off the bench and Shanley’s Mr. Intangible Man. Burd will guard any position, box out any player, go get any 50/50 balls and he never complains about anything on the floor. Bennet has the heart of a champion and plays every game the same, no matter who the Deacons are playing. The Shanley coaches wish they had 10 kids with his work ethic.
Blake Van Regenmorter (2022) |6-3 F| De Smet
He has started for much of the year but has come off the bench these past couple of games. Blake is a versatile defender that can take care of bigger players and still match up with smaller guards. He is a strong forward who boards well. Blake is also a good three-point shooter. He has been solid all year for the #1 ranked team in Class B. Blake has put up some impressive games this season, recently he dropped 20 points and grabbed 11 boards.
Brady Dahl (2022) |6-2 G| Bismarck Century
He is an important role player for the #3 ranked team in Class A North Dakota. Brady is an excellent leader for the Patriots. He plays extremely hard and he leaves it all on the court. Dahl is a versatile defender that can guard positions one through five. He does the little things for the Patriots like, diving on the floor, grabbing loose balls, and cleaning up the glass on offense and defense.
Caden Amerman Caden Amerman 6'4" | PF Enderlin | 2023 State ND (2023) |6-4 F| Enderlin & Trey Wall Trey Wall 5'10" | SG Enderlin | 2023 State ND (2023) |5-10 G| Enderlin
Enderlin is the #6 ranked team in ND. The Eagles are not in contention like they are this year without these two. One or the other starts and the other becomes the Eagle’s 6th-man. They both bring another gear to Enderlin that they have not had in the past. Caden and Trey are both athletic, strong guys who know their role and will do anything to help the team win. One night it’s guarding the other team’s best player and the next night is getting rebounds/setting good screens. In Trey’s case sometimes it’s scoring. Wall has had multiple double-digit scoring games and that gives the Eagles that extra threat to be a super-scary team.
Carter Osland (2022) |6-1 G| Northern Cass
He has been coming off the bench for the Jaguars and he has been one of their leading scorers this season. Carter has also been one of the Jags best outside shooters. Osland has really found his role on the team and he has been playing great lately for Northern Cass. Carter averages 11.5 ppg, 38 made 3’s while shooting 40% from the outside.
Charlie McCardle Charlie McCardle 6'1" | SF Mitchell | 2023 State SD (2023) |6-1 F| Mitchell
He typically comes off the bench for Mitchell and gives the Kernels a huge boost of energy. Charlie is the type of kid who always works as hard as he can. McCardle has the ability to match up with guards as well as BIGs. He is a physically strong player that will do the little things for his team. Charlie averages 8 ppg off the bench for Mitchell.
Cole Peterson Cole Peterson 6'2" | PG Sioux Falls Washington | 2023 State SD (2023) |6-1 G| Sioux Falls Washington
He has been a guy off the bench for Washington this season who has brought great energy and a voice to the floor. The Warriors have seen Cole grow as a player and learn his role on this particular team. Peterson is one of the best shooters in the Washington program, and they expect him to come in and knock down shots. Cole’s shooting along with his leadership skills have been a great asset to the Warriors this season.
Dontaye Fetzer Dontaye Fetzer 6'0" | SG Wilton-Wing | 2025 State ND (2025) |5-9 G| Wilton-Wing
He is a game-changer off the bench for the Miners. This youngster is a lightning-quick kid that can jump out of the gym. Fetzer is a shooter that can nail 3-pointers. He slashes and attacks the rim hard. Fetzer also passes the ball well. On defense, Dontaye gets into passing lanes and creates problems. He is absolutely an up-and-comer.
Eli Buhr Eli Buhr 6'2" | SG Central Cass | 2024 State ND (2024) |6-1 G| Central Cass
He is a great shooter that has been a nice spark for the Squirrels. Buhr has taken some pressure off the lead scorers for Central Cass. Eli provides #8 CC with an immediate threat from deep when he’s on the floor. Opposing defenses are forced to always account for him which helps create space on the court.
Evan Booth (2023) |6-0 G| Fargo South
He is an instant offense guy for the Bruins. When he comes into the game he has the green light to shoot the 3. Evan is leading the Bruins in 3’s and also in 3 point percentage. Booth has a very high arching shot and he seems to be able to get it off over length. Evan stood out right away as a shooter when I watched him earlier this season.
Gunnar Heuchert (2023) |6-0 G| Grand Forks Red River
He is one of the most consistent shooters for the Roughriders. He is shooting an impressive 38% for 3FG. That is a very nice compliment because Red River has many guys that get fill it up. Heuchert is also a very athletic and solid perimeter defender. The Roughriders are comfortable putting Gunnar on any of the elite guards in the EDC.
Jason Fisher (2024) |6-2 F| Sisseton
He is a spark plug for the Redmen when he comes off of the bench. Jason is excellent at contesting and altering shots. He also blocks many shot attempts. Fisher contributes on the offensive side with his ability to score inside or outside. He is only a sophomore and Sisseton is looking for a bright future from Fisher.
Jaxon Hennies (2023) |6-0 G| Dakota Valley
The 6th-man for the #1 ranked Panthers would start on many teams across South Dakota. Hennies averages 7 ppg, 2rpg, and 1 apg. Jaxon is just a really good all-around player, a smooth shooter, and he plays with grit and toughness that you’d expect out of a 6th man. Jaxon splits minutes with a very good senior guard (Brayden Major). Dakota Valley expects even bigger things out of Hennies next year.
Jovi Wolf Jovi Wolf 6'0" | SG Chester Area | 2024 State SD (2024) |5-8 G| Chester
Wolf comes in and gives the Flyers an immediate spark of athleticism on both ends of the floor. He has elite speed and jumping ability and is a two-time All-State wide receiver. Last year as a freshman Jovi was strictly a slasher to the hoop. However, as a sophomore, Wolf has added an outside shooting element to his game that now makes him a multi-layered threat. Defensively, Chester will sometimes ask him to guard the opponent’s best player for periods of time while they catch breaks and Wolf’s speed/jumping ability gives him an advantage in that area.
Kadyn Fast (2024) |6-1 G| De Smet
For most of the season, he has been the 6th-man for the best team in Class B SD. However, Kadyn has started recently for the Bulldogs. Fast is a great defender and very quick on his feet. He is an overall very smart defender. His defense vs. White River and Canistota last week earned him the starting spot. He has hit some big shots in big games for De Smet all season and is really playing well. Fast is fast in transition offense and defense. He does not force the issue on offense and Kadyn makes great plays on defense with a great nose for the ball. He seems to slip over and pick somebody’s pocket when they are not looking.
Kolby Jones (2022) |5-10 G| Fargo South
He is an All-State football player, so he is obviously a standout athlete. Kolby is the leader of the Bruins. He is not known for his scoring, but his communication and toughness are what lead South. Jones is an excellent passer, that sees the floor extremely well and he finds the open player. Kolby’s defense is tenacious which causes fits for opposing teams.
Kyler Moore Kyler Moore 6'1" | SG North Border | 2022 State ND (2022) |6-1 G| North Border
He’s playing on a torn ACL, so he isn’t playing in all the games, but when he does Kyler is a spark for the Eagles. I watched him shoot well and drill a bunch of 3-pointers earlier this year. Moore sees the floor with good vision, shoots well, and plays nice help defense. Kyler would have been a third-year starter but has been a boost off the bench when North Border has needed him.
Mason Bosse Mason Bosse 6'0" | SG Central Cass | 2023 State ND (2023) |5-11 G| Central Cass
He has had a very nice year for the #8 ranked team in ND Class B. Mason is an old-school player with a smart mind for the game. He does a great job of moving without the basketball and providing us an offensive and defensive spark off the bench. When I watched the squirrels earlier in the year, I was impressed with the looks of his 3-pointer jump shot.
Saif Shah Saif Shah 6'2" | SF SF Lincoln | 2022 SD (2022) |6-3 F| Sioux Falls Lincoln
Saif has kept a very positive attitude about his role this year for the Patriots. He is a player that has filled a variety of positions for LHS. Shah is approximately 6’3 and has been asked to play and defend the post. He has done it well. Through illnesses and injuries, Saif has stepped into the starting lineup a few times for the Pats. He is a smart and confident player. Saif is also one of the Patriot’s 3-point shooting leaders.
Shawn Hammerbeck Shawn Hammerbeck 6'7" | PF Winner | 2025 State SD (2025) |6-6 F| Winner
He is doing a nice job of coming in and relieving the Winner starting posts for a couple of minutes each quarter. Shawn is very strong and he does a nice job of positioning himself on defense to alter shots, and also making contact to grab rebounds at the highest point. On offense, Shawn makes himself available by being big and showing the guards where he wants the pass. Hammerbeck is being a great team player this year for the Warriors.
Thane Beheler (2024) |6-3 G| Mobridge-Pollock
Thane has made huge strides this year at improving his own game by being the first one at practice and being the last one to leave for the Tigers. He is also helping the team out tremendously by doing the little things like playing good defense, rebounding, setting screens, and finishing inside. Thane is a 100% total team player and is one of Mobridge-Pollock’s best passers. Beheler is never afraid to kick the basketball out to open shooters. He is one of the main reasons why the Tigers are getting better as the year progresses.
Wylee Delorme (2024) |6-4 G| Devils Lake
He has been producing tremendously well for the Firebirds. Wylee is a very athletic and lengthy basketball player. Delorme can contribute in many different ways, he shoots the ball very well and can attack the basket from any angle. Wylee’s length allows Devils Lake to stretch their defense out and disrupt the opponent’s offensive strategies. The Firebirds are looking forward to watching Wylee mature and become a leader for their team.
