Today, we are taking a look at a group of under the radar players to watch in Class 1 as the district playoffs get underway.
Roman Phillips (Atlanta): A 6’7″ 2023 forward who has led the Hornets to a 19-4 record and a No. 2 seed at the Class 1, District 11 tournament. He can impact a game with his scoring, rebounding and shot blocking. He can score with both hands around the basket and he can rebound out of his area. He has good timing to block shots. He is a threat for a double-double every time he steps on the court.
Paden Gilbert (Chadwick): A 2022 wing who’s led the Cardinals to a 19-4 record and the top seed at the District 4 tournament. He led the Cardinals to a district championship last season. He came back from an early-season hand injury to have a big senior season. He’s an athletic wing who attacks the basket and plays well with a lot of pace. He is a solid rebounder who can take the ball off the glass and go coast to coast.
Isaac Seabaugh (Wellsville-Middletown): A 5’10″ 2022 guard who has led the Tigers to a 19-6 record and No. 1 seed in the District 10 tournament. He also played a big part in helping the Tigers to a Class 2 district championship last season. He plays with a lot of energy which makes sense as he is an excellent cross country/track performer as well. He can shoot the basketball and get to the basket on the attack to create more offense.
Brendyn McDaniel (North Shelby): A 6’1″ 2023 guard who has led the Raiders to a 17-6 record and a No. 1 seed in the District 11 tournament. i saw him earlier in the year at the Norm Stewart Classic and he was very impressive. He plays a fine all-around game, but he can really shoot it from downtown. He can knock down the triples in bunches when he is on his game. He also plays solid defense as he keeps himself in the right position.
Kane Cooper Kane Cooper 6'6" | PF Springfield Central | 2022 State MO (Lockwood): An athletic 6’4″ 2022 forward who’s led Lockwood to a No. 2 seed at the District 4 tournament. He’s a strong kid who checks in about 210 pounds and he is very mobile around the basket. He can also go out on the perimeter and be a playmaker with the basketball. He has a nice turnaround jumper in the lane and he can step out and hit the mid-range jumper off the catch.
Corbin Axtell Corbin Axtell 6'0" | CG Grundy County | 2024 State MO (Grundy County): The 6’2″ 2024 guard was an impact player as a freshman last season and he’s taking his productivity to another level as a sophomore. He’s a smooth lefty who plays under control and can get buckets on the drive or with perimeter jumpers. He is averaging 21 points, seven rebounds, four assists and two steals in leading the Panthers to an 18-7 record and No. 2 seed in the District 14 tournament.
